I'm 35 (I wish I was dead) and spent my twenties in Chapel hill N.C. listening to some of the GREATEST music that the east coast, at that time, had to offer. "Yo La Tengo", "Ben Folds Five (and otherwise)", "Machines Of Loving Grace", "Southern Culture On The Skids", "Archers Of Loaf", "Moby", "Queen Sarah Saturday", "June", "The Veldt", "Flat Duo Jets" and the list goes inexorably on and on (but FUCK Dexter...). But, even though I had "heard" of A New York group called "Cibo Matto" from fliers and bills doting Franklin Street and downtown Durham and Raleigh, somehow I never got around to seeing them, I MISSED out on this excruciatingly FABULOUS music.
Somehow I lived through the mid to late nineties, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (Chapel Hill was, to the MID to LATE 90's, 2/3Rd's or so of what Athens was to the EARLY to MID 80's or 5/32's of what Seattle was to the LATE 80's to EARLY 90's)(AAAAAAHHHH!!!!) without actually SEEING Cibo Matto live in concert at "The Cat's Cradle" or "Buying" one of their album's (either new at "Schoolkid's records" or used at "nice price used books and records").
Fast, FAST forward. It's now, ten years or so later. It's hard to believe but I'm fat, married, sad, and crude. I live in Michigan now with my inexplicably tolerant, but beautiful wife and beloved sons. I only just acquired Cibo Matto's "Vive La Woman" and "Super Relax" via USENET and I simply can't recommend/ PUSH them enough.
Sounds and music from the GODS. Simply beyond belief. Beyond original, or even inspired, an extraordinarily professional first effort.
I can't recommend this, now defunct, group enough. Spend your money. Buy their albums. Do it now. Become obsessive. Alarm friends and family. Get these albums OR DIE TRYING. They really are that good.
