Just saw Brokeback Mountain
While I liked it, I thought it was a little long. They could have cut a few minutes and not really lost anything. But that is a minor criticism. The acting was brilliant, especially Heath Ledger. I also didn't mind seeing Heath in the buff or Jake either for that matter. LOL. While I never read the story it was based on, I think the filmmakers might have played it a little safe to get that mainstream appeal. But it is a very good film. I have not seen Walk the Line or other contenders for Best Picture so I cannot compare.

I saw this with a friend of mine. But all he could talk about afterward was that he thought there was too much gay sex in it. To which I said "Huh?" There was far less sexual content in this movie than in almost any other R rated movie ever made (maybe a slight exaggeration). I thought the love scenes were well done and were certainly not gratuitous, as is the case in so many other movies. This (somehow) led to a discussion on love scenes between two women. My opinion on that is that those scenes are usually inserted into movies to appeal to 14 year old boys and are usually not integral to the plot. Which also explains why there is so much more female nudity in movies than male nudity.

I am not sure what my point it, exactly, except that this movie cerainly brings out a lot of issues that should be discussed. And that, while attitudes towards gays have certainly improved in recent years, we still have a long way to go. But I think movies like this may help.

4. I know
But I think he may have been referring to other displays of affection between the two characters as well. It would be a odd love story never to show the lovers kissing.

5. Your friend has issues.
The sex was very subtle ihmo. I don't think it was really about sex anyway. It was about love. I saw the movie yesterday and I was just soooo sad. Look how many lives are destroyed or forever tarnished because of some ridiculous notion that loving someone is wrong. How sad for them. How sad for us as humans. How sad that this country has regressed into that mindset again.

I loved the movie. Yes it was long, but I was okay with that. I thought it was brilliantly acted and beautifully filmed. If it wins best picture I won't be at all disappointed.

8. You may be right
His first words out of the theater were "I'm not homophobic but...".

9. LOL! A great way to convince someone that you're
a big homophobe is to say "I'm not homophobic but..." Although I guess I should give him credit for seeing the movie.

I suppose my husband was weirded out by gay sex in movies at first too. But between watching Tales of the City and Six Feet Under, he's pretty desensitized. The sex in Brokeback Mountain was very subtle compared to some of the romps in Six Feet Under (and even those weren't that bad).

I've actually gotten to the point that I get kinda turned on by it the way guys get turned on by lesbian sex. I sure didn't mind seeing Jake Gyllenhaal nekkid. :)

10. I think he may be, because there was about one minute
of actual gay sex in it... maybe. A scene with Heath and Michelle in bed, and Hake and Anne Hathaway in the backseat of her car. Overall, there was probably about three minutes of sexual content in the whole movie. Maybe.

11. I couldn't talk my husband into going to see it with me, however, he told
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 02:12 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
me he wants to see it when it comes out on DVD...I think he'll really like it, he's very open minded, for his generation (I'm five years younger, so I can say that :)). And, it's a damn good movie.

I just thought it was funny that he didn't want to go to the theatre. My daughter and I went, though and cried our eyes out at the end.

I'm with the other ladies here on this thread...these two actors are so attractive, although Heath played it down considerably. Jake on the other hand...I think my husband may fall in love with him whenever he does see it! MKJ

12. Love scenes between women appeal to more than 14 year old boys.

14. I know LOL
The usual marketing for Hollywood movies seems to aimed at teenage boys- hence, the American Pie franchise. I prefer nudity to puerile humor, myself.

13. Saw it and loved it.
And I was just fine with the sex scenes, though Mr. SG said they made him uncomfortable. Nevertheless, he liked the movie. One thing I really liked was how Jake and Heath could communicate so much with just a look.

15. The Heath Ledger character was the definition of laconic
cowboy. At times I wanted to shake him. Say something, you fool! LOL.

But I loved the scene with the parents of Jack Twist, towards the end. I think the mother knew and was okay with it, in her own way. It was very touching.

16. I think they both knew
But the Dad certainly wasn't okay with it... but the mother had loved Jack, and so accepted it. I think she got how much Ennis meant to Jack, and that Ennis had loved Jack... that scene made me cry even more than the shirt scene...
