My 2 yr old is going to get her eyes operated on Tuesday morning
Could someone send some good vibes, prayers, thoughts for her? I'm a nervous wreck about it and I dont want her to go through with it but she could go blind if left untreated. She has exotropia pretty bad where her eye is outwards more than 50% of the time but she has good vision besides that. Shes only getting her right eye done - the left eye will correct itself once the right one does (so he says) and I hope thats it.

37. Childrens..
When my son was admitted in November for his breathing I loved it there. The nurses were excellent, the doctors were great, and I just felt like he was invincible and he'd be fine.

I still have that feeling but its harder to think that way since shes going to be put under.

He didn't have to have surgery but I think I know how scary this must be for you.

It's a fairly routine surgery and I have never heard of complications.

Focus on how much better she will be able to see.

Keep us posted!

24. I wish I didnt have to put her through it -
Hers are out more than 50% of the time and shes incredibly clumsy. She will walk right into anything, will trip on a pen on the floor, and constantly getting bumps on her head from running into walls. Doc says this will make her see better. Shes even starting to close an eye to watch tv. So I think I'm doing the right thing for her.

mess - not to downplay my daughter, but for some reason to me, babies really touch a soft spot. I'll be thinking of all the hugs !!

How did you let go when the nurse came in to take him? Thats going to be my problem - I dont think I can let her go screaming and kicking with someone.

hydrocelectomy done (Water on testicles) and I knew it was for the best, but man  Luckily, my family was there so I was able to cry on a few shoulders. It was horrible seeing him go down the hallway in someone else's arms. You'll never lose that feeling, but you'll be so happy to see her in Recovery.

having to wait through a child's surgery. Especially at only 2 years old.

It hurts me - almost like I gave her the eye issues - I've always had eye problems, and thank god, she didnt get the congenital cataracts that I have. Its every parents worse nightmare having a child go through any type of surgery or illness. :( I'm trying not to show anything other than being strong for her and telling her in kid terms what is going to happen.

I wish I could be in the or with her. I'd feel so much better.

64. I know, purr. I know. I spent my first 2-1/2 years with casts on my legs,
which IS a genetic thing (the bowed legs and pronated feet). I worried that my sons might have to do the same, but they didn't.

So I got lucky. You, maybe a little less, but you have to trust the doctors. I know it's hard, I do. But those people didn't become pediatic surgeons because they didn't like kids, did they? the one thing I can guarantee you is this: Those doctors will do their absolute best with your daughter. They will.

Hang in there. let us know how it works out.

My son had esotrophia (one of his eyes turned in), and had I not been persistent with the optometrist when he was a year old, and gotten a correct diagnosis, he would have become blind in that eye by age 6 without corrective glasses. Thankfully, he didn't have to go through surgery.

A for your little one and you.

Please update after the surgery when you can.

as a child. Went through all the patch treatments, the exercises etc. I don't even remember the surgery, I was about 4 or 5 at the time. My father tells me there were no complications and I sailed through it amazingly well.

All that was 45 or so years ago. (I'm 49 now)

66. It is tough to send your kid off to surgery.
My Mom still talks about it and I am 45 years old.

I was born with a cleft lip and palate and they did the first surgery to close the palate when I was 10 days old. There were many surgeries to come after that, and my Mom talks to this day about how difficult it was to take me in for a surgery.

I'd go in feeling good--like any average kid. She'd watch them take me away to surgery knowing they would bring me back to her hurting. The only thing that kept her going was the realization that I needed those surgeries.

You feel your little one needs this surgery and you feel the Doc is a good one. Those are two very important things to hang onto, I think.

I'll light a candle for your little one (and for you!)

75. That is so scary!
Is it a same day surgery procedure, or will she be hospitalized overnight?

I went through similar stuff when my daughter had ear tubes put in. She was nearly deaf until she got the tubes (with no history of ear infection). She had also been very sick the previous month (hospitalized for 7 days with RSV). Brace yourself, the worst part is letting her go in the anesthesia room...I will light a candle for rapid healing for her!

Did you know that he Queen of England's littlest grandchild, Lady Louise, had this same surgery on her eye? They waited until she was two years old. She is apparently fine now.

When I worked in daycare, my favorite little tot had to have heart surgery. Her mom was a nurse and knew how smooth it would be, but was freaked out anyway. She came through fine and was excited to show everyone her new "zipper" scar where the doctors cut her open.

Eye surgery is scary in a whole different way, I know, but be strong; it'll be okay!

100. You should have nothing to worry about.
I've worn glasses since I was 2. I had the same procedure done at Children's (back in 1958/59) and other than having aging eyesight now... my eyes are fine 40+ years later. I had to stay in hospital for about a week (both eyes were bandaged to begin with) and they let me out when the bandages came off. After that I had to occasionally wear a patch to exercise the eye muscles, endured the ointment/drops that my poor parents had to administer (I remember that it was painful - and have since learned that I have 'sensitive eyes' when I got contacts and reacted badly to the initial solution that they gave me - so I imagine that anything you get now will take sensitivity to the chemicals issue into consideration). Anyway, after the surgery and some recovery time at home, I had to occasionally wear a patch to help exercise the eye muscles, spent about an hour a day looking at the big "E" card and pointing which direction it was in, and then about a year or two going to some place on Fifth Ave. between Oakland and Shadyside, once a week, to look into a big grey machine (kind of like a giant "ViewMaster" (remember those anyone?)) which required me to turn knobs until a picture was in focus. That was boring.

It's pretty routine, especially if they are now doing it as day surgery. Your kid will probably be miserable and cranky for a couple of days but then should be just fine. I also remember that the bandages were initially scary (I was 2 after all) but some light did filter in and having mama's voice near by helped... so did chocolate ice cream.

Your daughter should be fine. Give her a hug - you need it... she's probably less anxious about it than you are.
