Used cars: What's your opinion of Audi?
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 11:01 AM by supernova
I'm looking at a car on Craigslist for a 93 90S model. I've read epinions.com about it and it seems to be a well-made, reliable model, though repairs and parts can be expensive.

Anyone have any experience with Audi?

edit: Also, what the life span of your average Audi? Oh, and since I'm at work, I'll check back in about lunchtime. Can you please keep it kicked so it doesn't sink? I really need to know this. Thanks. :hi:

2. I guess the big question is, "What's the mileage?"
I've never owned an Audi, but have had a couple of friends who have. You're right, repairs are expensive and Audi's are not as reliable as other makes.

You can expect over 100,000 miles easily with a well maintained Audi.

Is it a quattro (AWD)?

3. V6, but not a quatro
it does have 97,000 on it.

What would you consider the most reliable models?

4. Subaru, Toyota (Lexus) and Honda (Acura)
German cars aren't very reliable unless the maintenance has been kept up.

My last two cars have been Acuras, but if I ever buy another car (which I'm hoping I'll never have to) I'd buy a Subie in a second. My son has one and it's really well built and engineered well too.

5. I'm not a big fan

I would estimate that a 1993 Audi is rapidly nearing the end of its operational life.

My father owned a 1974 Audi 100 and then a 1981 5000 (a co-worker was moving back to Turkey and couldn't get unleaded there), which my brother took over. The 5000 lasted until about 1997, and was replaced by a 1990 Audi 200. He now has a VW passat. I recall all of these cars spending massive amounts of time in the shop.

6. Well made, long lifespan, lots of expensive little quirks
I've never owned one, but I work for a tire company, so I hear comments on them. They are very good cars, like a Volvo or Mercedes or Saab. The complaint I hear is that they break down a lot, and require expensive maintenance. Keep in mind that where I work, I will hear the negatives, not the positives. Plus, a thirteen year old car will have had all the normal quirks fixed by now, so your biggest problem will be things breaking. They are quality cars, so 97K miles is not high mileage. Age will cause some parts to fail, and they may be expensive.

I drive a 23 year old Mercedes Benz at the moment, and my opinion is that if you get an older car that runs well off the lot, it will run well for a long time. If it has obvious problems, like too many engine noises (adjusted for age), smoke, leaks, etc, it will be a constant maintenance problem. So judge the car on its own merits, but don't worry about the make. It's a good make--though good makes often have expensive parts.

Just my opinion on them. I'm a bookkeeper, not a mechanic.
