2. He wrote the music with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera...
...and Manzanera's wife contributed lyrics. It's Gilmour's first solo album since 1990, so we'll see...

3. Let me be the first in this thread to say...
Gilmour is a fucking bad ass! I've always tried to incorporate some of his stylings.

5. Adrian Belew once dubbed himself "Whammy Bar King"...
...but I always felt that the title belonged to Gilmour. He's one of the few (Ronnie Montrose being another...listen to "Zero G" on "The Speed Of Sound") who uses it in a very precise, subtle way.

Belew (to paraphrase Frank Zappa) generally "beats it with his fist."

Gilmour has comparable chops to Jeff Beck, but where Beck often employs anger and aggression to get his point across (nothing wrong with that), Gilmour is the MASTER of "bittersweet."

7. YES! Another Ronnie Montrose fan!
Not many of us around, it seems. :toast:

The guy's a genius. If it's got strings, he can play it — and play it better than just about anybody.

8. Truer words have not been spoken
Gilmour can wow you with subtlety. Guitar solos you can close your eyes and really just sink into. Not many others have the same effect on me. Always been a huge PF fan.

11. I met Adrian Belew once.
Nice guy. I asked about his set-up on Big Electric Cat and he told me. Of course, I've forgotten it. :-(

13. Belew's TRUE jaw-dropping moment...
...is right HERE:

The L-O-N-G version of "The Torture Never Stops" features him in terrifying, locked precision with Zappa and drummer Terry Bozzio. Words can't describe it.

He's found a kindred spirit in Robert Fripp, and holds the longest tenure of any member of King Crimson (other than RF himself), but this Zappa CD...even Zappa acknowledges that track in the liner notes as being "one of those nights."

14. Thanks for the tip.
Will seek it out. I just know if I finally get into Zappa I might not be seen for a while. I tend to have hard musical crushes, and Zappa's output was so prolific.

12. I've heard the title track...eh.
The middle instrumental section is quite good. The stuff surrounding it...not so hot. I still think his first two solo albums are among my favorite albums ever.
