The original meaning of "romance" was a literary movement that involved caring more about the idea of a thing than the thing itself. If you stop and think about it, that's a pretty sick thing to apply to relationships, and all too many people do exactly that. They care more about the idea of a relationship than the person they're actually in a relationship with. They care more about the idea of a man/woman than the actual man/woman they're sharing their life with.

People who romanticize (there's that word again) chivalry forget that the rules of chivalry only apply to women of noble birth. Common women could be raped and left by the side of the road to die (and if you think that sort of thing didn't happen, you need to read more history books). Contrary to popular belief, chivalry did not celebrate women, it celebrated classism and social stratification of the most grotesque sort.
