136. Me too....
There was this old toothless woman who was in the last throws of alcoholic dementia in the little cubby hole next to me....

She kept yelling and yelling Help Me Jesus, Take Me Away....

And then a Russian Doc came in to see me....

I am really aware of my illness and the consequences when I contract the big P....

I told him that my cough was not productive yet that I needed more liquid and that my temp was higher than he thought because my normal temp is around 96.7... It was at 99.2, high for me...

He looked at me in a very condesending way and said... Who is doctor... You or me....

I demanded another doctor who would at least listen to what I knew about my illness....

I never saw that doc again....

33. I STABBED myself in the abdomen with a SCREWDRIVER! - College memories!
The most recent trip was for a tetanus shot after I caught my arm on a rusty old hinge while working at the parents place. But my most memorable ER story happened about 15 years ago. I was in college and had gotten one of those Nerf basketball hoops with the soft spongeball. After putting it up, I put the screwdriver in my pocket and we started playing basketball. I went up for a rebound and came down on the floor. The screwdriver drove up into my abdomen. It was a pretty big flathead screwdriver, so I thought I had punctured my stomach or some vital organ. We went to the ER and they took some x-rays, sonograms and some other tests that I don't remember. Turns out it missed everything important, except my pride. But I got a bunch of free beers out of the story.

62. Broken toe -- had the worst resident ever
I went in because I couldn't get a shoe on that foot and I was hoping they could give me a cast boot or something because I had to work the next day. I had to wait for two hours then got a resident who told me that nothing could be done for broken toes and to go home. I explained that I needed something to put on my foot and he said "So, basically you want to get some attention from your co-workers." Since he was holding my five inch thick file, I suggested that he if he read it he would know that I had had an operation for a fairly rare brain tumor at that same hospital two years earlier and had much more exotic medical conditions I could use to try and suck sympathy out of my co-workers (not that I do)and that nobody wastes a perfectly gorgeous July afternoon sitting in an emergency room to hear that from some disgruntled resident. He kind of mumbled something, got me the cast boot, then told me to go home and take some aspirin or ibuprofen for the pain. Of course, I am allergic to both aspirin and ibuprofen which he'd have known if he had read the file and/or the thing I had to fill out that was in his hand. I told him his methods and bedside manner left a lot to be desired, left, and called my otolaryngologist who is also a bigwig at the hospital and reported the guy. My doctor went straight down to ER and chewed the hell out of the guy. It was great.

71. Just three days ago I went to the ER b/c of agonizing pain
In my left leg (which I know is caused by a disc problem in my spine). The drugs my doctor had prescribed did not help at all (first Darvocet then Vicodin) so I paged my doctor on Sunday afternoon. He wasn't on call but another doctor told me to double up on the Vicodin (these were 750mg of the extra strength Vicodin), so in my desperation to get rid of the tremendous pain, I did as he told me and spent the next couple of hours puking my guts out. With pain persisting, by the way.

I went to the ER and was seen by the most amazing doctor who had just had surgery for the exact problem I have. He held my hand and said "I know exactly what you're going through and I'll make sure you get some relief" - I almost cried when he said that. He prescribed Prednisone (for inflammation), Flexiril (muscle relaxer), and Percocet (for the pain) and I actually felt amazing relief. Last night I ran out of the Percocet and had to spend half of my morning today (in terrible pain, of course) explaining to my family doctor that I needed a refill. His nurse told me to take two Vicodin! I wanted to choke her through the phone. (Keep in mind that I had called his office on Monday morning and told them of my O.D. from the double dose of Vicodin and also told them about the new scripts - they acknowledged that I'd likely need a refill before my follow-up appointment with him which is Friday.) It was like pulling teeth to get that damn refill but thankfully I have it now and feel much better. If we know what works, I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE IN PAIN!!

Don't take more (you already know why), just do 1, and only 1, shot of booze (I like vodka). Wow! Like the difference between night and day.

77. 10 CM kidney stone...
it wouldn't fit down the channel.

Oh Lordie, they had me where they wanted me...

The nurse mocked me for dancing in pain.

The doctor pushed too hard on it...

I drove myself out of there eventually.

For five days I basically told 'em to self fornicate.

Then I got internet smart. All you need is jump and bump and let physics do the work.

Then I changed my diet.

134. Thanks, tigereye!
I feel pretty good on this 3-drug combo but I just don't like the runaround that I went through today. I have an appointment with my family doctor (who has a well-established relationship with me and knows about my disc problem and knows I'm not a drug seeker) on Friday and I'm going to really put my foot down about my treatment. I refuse to suffer any more - it's been weeks of pain off and on and lately it's been TERRIBLE.

I am forever thankful for that empathetic ER doc. He knew exactly what to give me to help.

I hope you are doing well! Hopefully, we'll meet up at another gathering before long. :hi:

It was on the day of Beware the Beast Man's Bachelor party weekend. He still claims I did this on purpose, but my mom (the nurse) freaked me out with all these stories of exploding internal organs so I went to the ER.

But I was fine. They found a cyst and sent me home and told me to see my doctor. Beast Man still got his Bachelor weekend. He came home on Sunday with a huge grin and glitter on his face.

85. Chest pain
Summer of 2001. Awoke with the most awful pain I've ever felt. Crushing chest, upper arm, jaw pain and nausea. ER admitted me, did tests and found one enzyme level was up. I remember the Dr. saying enzyme tests indicated something was going on with my muscles. They did a heart catherization and said I had some placque but nothing bad. I stayed in the hospital for 3 days and was released to see my regular Dr...who was an absolute ASS! He put me on anti-depressants and never answered any questions about what caused it. I changed Dr's and still never found out what really happened. We moved back here a few years ago and I haven't seen a Dr. since.

87. Bruised kidney
I fell down the stairs at home and landed on my side/back.

I thought I was fine, but the next day I felt REALLY sick and started barfing all over the place.

I hadn't barfed in 18 years, so I decided it was time for a trip to the ER.

They decided I was mostly okay, and didn't need to be sent in an ambulance to Fresno for an MRI. Since I didn't have insurance, that was VERY GOOD news. They sent me home with anti-nausea meds and vicodin.

That was back in early October, and I still feel a bit off. I need to go back to the doctor and have it followed up on. :(

I still had to wait almost twelve hours to get admitted, although I'd called ahead and confirmed they had a bed for me.

Before that, it was when I got hit in the nose when a hand-chopper fell off an overhead shelf and landed blade-side down on the bridge of my nose. There wasn't enough skin for stitches, so they had to glue it back together. That was summer 2001.

That ER was SCARY, too. Just in the middle of the day, in a two hour stretch--almost twenty new patients. In a city of less than 100,000. SCARY. And most of them were in a LOT more trouble than my roommate (bruised spleen, cracked rib, that was all).

108. I got hit by a car
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 06:52 PM by Liberalynn
crossing our Main St years ago. A guy anticipated the light and hit me before I was all the way across. I didn't see my life flash before my eyes but looking up Main St from lying in the middle of it, it kind of felt like watching everything on a slow motion camera and I don't remember hearing the sounds of the traffic. The EMT when they got there said I was in shock.

The ride in the ambulance to the ER was a unique experience. I was strapped to the backboard in case I had a back injury. I think I was more worried about sliding out the door or tipping over. I don't want to have to go through that experience again.

Luckily I only had a few minor bumps and bruises, all though I still get bad arthritis pains in my knees on occassion which I never had before I knocked them on the pavement in that accident.

When I went into the ER, the lady doc, said to me, "thank God you are not dead. I was sure they would be bringing you in DOA because people drive like maniacs on that St. Then she told me how she was crossing the street with her baby in the stroller and how she had to yank it up with all her might to get out of the way of some moron who ran the light." She was very nice to me because she empathized so much.

The only bad thing was I really had to go the bathroom and they wouldn't let me get up until the exrays came back. Finally when my sister got there she went to the patient advocate and said "she's really got to go," and luckily they had just gotten my exrays and the all clear so I could go. LOL.

Sadly some one did get killed on our Main St last year for the same reason. Some one jumped the light and hit a poor old man, who was sort of a fixture down town. Personally I don't think they leave the crosswalk signals on long enough before they turn the traffic lights.

139. Decompression sickness (The Bends)
Didn't have it, but they had the chamber on standby. Unfortunately, the divemaster who decided I was bent made a radio call that made everyone (including my wife, who was with me on this trip) think I'd had a heart attack or was otherwise expiring...when our boat got back to shore one of the assembled people asked "which one's bent?," because my slightly-prone-to-seasickness assistant was looking a little worse than me and I was sitting up in the bow, kicking back with my bootied feet up on the anchor, shades in place, trying to look as unbent as possible and wishing all the onlookers, science people, support people, paramedica, and law enforcement would just go away. Had a huge boatload of tourists go past, taking photos and video of me getting examined back at the dock, before they whisked me off to the hospital. Very impressive emergency procedures, including law enforcement officers on hand (in the words of one of them, when I asked why they were there) "in case you die."

The entire experience courtesy of an overzealous and relatively inexperienced NOAA divemaster -- I knew I wasn't bent. The ER doctor was so excited by the lung volume results on my NOAA dive physical -- part of the medical package that went with me -- that he started showing it to other doctors and nurses. I was a celebrity... :D
