Need advice about "Greenies" - those pet chew things - I know
a lot of pets have been hurt by these. I just went to the Walgreens here in the mall and I saw they were still there! Haven't they been recalled? I need ideas on how to approach this. Should I call the regional manager or the humane society or what?

1. No recall to my knowledge. Still being sold and stocked nationwide.
Or so I understand.

2. Just don't buy them.
Lots of dogs have died from being given Rimadyl, but vets still prescribe it.

3. I wasn't planning on buying one, I don't have a dog. I'm trying to
alert the store about the dangers of these before another pet dies, but if they haven't been recalled, I guess not much can be done.

My black lab died while on Rimadyl I think. (although I don't remember it being spelled that way) It was for joint pain. I did not realize there was a problem! Can you point me somewhere to learn more?

Thanks in advance,
Tammy

Never mind, I just did a search on it. My dog was a lab. I am in tears right now.

6. Oh, boy, I used to have a pile of links.

My sister's dog died 1 month after starting it, even though he had all the blood screening. They stopped running the tv ads b/c they would be required to list death as a side effect and they didn't think that would sound too cool on the voice-over. I'll see if I can find some of the info.

Edit: Here's one to start with:

Just google rimadyl death and you'll get lots of links.

7. I just updated my question to you
OMG I am just sick over this. Buffett was old, 14, but to think I contributed to his death is really upsetting right now.

8. My sister went through the same thing.

It was NOT YOUR FAULT, any more than it was hers. She even did the research and questioned her vet about it. But the vet assured her that those were only stories. That vet no longer prescribes it.

I'm really sorry about Buffett. I'm sure you were only trying to make him comfortable. Please don't blame yourself.

Edit: Found an old pic of Walter:

9. Thanks for the nice words
But honest to god, you try to do the right thing with your pets. These pills were so expensive, that after Buffett died, we gave the pills back to the vet to give to someone who might not be able to afford the prescription. I will try not to blame myself but I am really upset that I just didn't know about the drug. I really should have researched it further.

10. You probably would have heard the same thing from your vet.
I don't trust conventional vets at all anymore.

11. No I have a country vet
I really don't believe he would have known this. We sit on the same folding chairs that have been there for 20 years, he drives the same beat up truck and we all have his cell phone number in case of emergencies. He honestly has treated all of my pets for the past 20 years. He isn't in it for the money, he really loves animals. But....I am calling him tomorrow.

12. There's an article my vet wrote.
But no direct link. Go to www.therightremedy.com, click on "Pet Health Articles", then find the article called, "Rimadyl - Wolf in Sheep's Clothing." You might be interested in the info at the bottom.

14. It's not your fault!
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 09:10 PM by ET Awful
You put your trust in someone who is supposed to be a knowledgeable professional. Don't blame yourself. And from the sound of it, you shouldn't blame your vet either. The fault truly lies with the manufacturer that continues to peddle this crap.

You tried to do the right thing, and for that you should be commended

13. Some people think they're healthy.
Personally, I think they're gross. They turn slimy and gelatinous very quickly. Not a pleasant thing to find.
