girls embarrassed or shy to eat in front of boys ?
i never understood this. it seems most common among teenage girls and especially with boys they are attracted to. but i notice it among some older women also.

for any of the women here did you ever feel this way ?

maybe it's because i just like to eat a lot. but i never understood the whole thing of being embarrassed of guys watching you eat.

4. Women who don't bow to those socially-induced stupidities are sexeh!
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 12:37 AM by Benfea
…mostly because deep down I'm hoping the woman in question is free of the insecurities that go along with that crap. Unfortunately, that's not always the case, but I still have that stereotype in my head and react positively to any rejection of socially-proscribed gender expectations.

Let the belches fly!

PS—I dunno why, but women I date are rarely comfortable belching around me, but platonic female friends will belch gloriously and shamelessly. Oh well, I'm more comfortable shopping with female friends than with someone I'm dating. Funny how that stuff works out.

7. definitely!
best dating experience i have had in recent years, was when i went out with a really nice 6' girl to a mexican restaurant, and ate till we couldn't move. laughed the whole time, no inhibitions, was like being out with a best-friend. interestingly enough, she out-country-ed me! grew up on a farm, raising and slaughtering livestock, lived in an area where florida panthers still exist (fish & wildlife might debate that), R_A had a little place in his heart cleared out for her.

the first date, i gave her 2 lbs of homemade boudin. anywho, we went out a few times, and then she went back with her ex-husband: put a terrible hurtin on me.

two years, and plenty of "dainty dates" later, that is still THE BAR, by which all others are judged.

to be watched.

6. I never had a problem with it as a teen
Eating in front of people usually stopped the eating disorder jokes- I was very thin and people would make really hurtful comments about that until they saw the amount of food I put away. :)

11. I had someone worried about my weight last spring...
I lost a bunch of weight due to being on Adderall XR and working overtime in a very physical job. Apparently, this customer approached a co-worker and asked her if I had an eating disorder. She told me about it after the question (she knew I didn't have an eating disorder),

What makes it funny is, the next time this customer saw me, I'm standing in front of our freezer section holding a box of mozzarella sticks going, "WHAT 7 MINUTES?!?! I'm hungry now!"

She never questioned that I had an eating disorder again. I'm just on meds that cause weight loss and I had a very physical job that I put a ton of hours into. It led to me being a size 00 for awhile. I'm like a 2/4 now that I left it.

9. Boy, in this lounge you find out about problems
you never even thought of. I know a young woman I wish would just eat whether in secret or not. She lives on green tea and grapefruits!! Worried about her.

10. Sometimes...
I'm not embarrassed in front of someone I really like but I work with some judgemental assholes and I've heard them giving other people shit about their weight. Sometimes, despite myself, I'll avoid eating junk food in front of them because I just don't want to have a conversation about what I should be eating instead.

I knew girls in college who wouldn't eat in front of guys because they didn't want to be seen as expensive dates. I guess it's better to be perceived as a cheap date.

12. Yes, when I was a young teen I would never eat in front of
a boy. It wasn't a weight issue at all, it was more a matter of not wanting to do something embarrassing like get food in your teeth, or dribble something. I got over it by the time I was 16.

My 16yo daughter never worried about anything like this, she would just think it was bizarre. (of course she worries about her nips showing when she's cold and I would never have worried about something like that when I was her age).

14. I have an appetite that won't quit.
harleydad loves it! Been that way since I can remember, even when I'm sick. But I'm not overweight -- I just fight with the same 10 pounds all the time. Most people say that "what not to say on your first date" line to me when they see me eat: "Wow -- you must've been hungry!"

15. Butterflies
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 09:12 AM by Crisco
It can be very difficult to eat if you've got *major* butterflies in your stomach, and if you're a teenage girl not accustomed to that feeling. They settle down quickly enough ...

My first boyfriend, I couldn't eat a thing the first two dates.

16. Growing up in an Eastern European family...Never...
a hearty appetite was encouraged...

However!!!! I know a lot of gals who try not to eat or eat very little in front of men and even other women and I assume it is part of the culture of "thin"

17. I was extremely self concious as a teen
I went to a high school prom when I was a freshmen, he was a senior, lovely restaurant, etc. I held on to a chewed up piece of gristle in the back of my mouth until we were leaving (even ate my dessert with it there) Visited the ladies room on the way out and disposed of it. 30ish years ago
