songs that remind you of an ex
here in your bedroom by goldfinger

it started playing when my first love and i were starting to make that hard journey toward breaking up (it sucks being 15 when you lose your first love) and that song was more honest than we could be with each other

i'm also listening to the cd i bought for the first guy i dated after my seven year relationship

1. It's Too Late by Carole King
When I first met him, I realized that would be our breakup song. The song spoke to me, of how it would end.

It's exactly what happened, 6 years later.

26. !

Actually, I left him. That song eerily, yet perfectly, described how it ended.

We could never agree on 'our song' during the whole time...lol. Funny how we had the break up song!
We're still great friends, though. :hi:

2. And All That Could Have Been.
Nine Inch Nails. Beautiful song. They helped me get over that breakup eventually. Ancient history, as I'm now living with my gorgeous fiance, girlfriend of 3 years. That song can STILL make me cry though. Trent is GOD. Well, him and Maynard. :)

6. I finally saw Trent live this past year, 2 nights in a row, actually...
and I about died it was so incredible. That night, my girlfriend came to know the magic that is Trent. Not to mention, The Dresden Dolls surprised the HELL out of us as the opening act. INCREDIBLY powerful. Great shows, good times. :)

8. PERFECT combination, that. I saw A Perfect Circle during
Lalapalooza a few years back. Maynard maintained eye contact with me for like HALF of 3 Libras. I almost melted. LoL That was the day my girlfriend learned of the magic of Maynard. It didn't quite stack up to seeing Tool, however, ALTHOUGH I had the added bonus of Twiggy playing bass for APC AND James Iha (I LOVE THE PUMPKINS!) playing guitar. haha Again, GOOD times. OH, and 30 Seconds to Mars opened, another VERY unappreciated band. Ok, I'm SOOOO off topic. ;)

Trent is god.

He's playing about an hour from me tonight. I can't go-no babysitter.
At least I've been to a few concerts before.

ALTCHB is a great song.

3. The Dance
Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars alone
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

5. my first love:
This song is..

Artist: Jawbreaker
Song: Do You Still Hate Me?

Lyrics:

Been hearing about you.
All about your disapproval.
Still I remember the way I used to move you.
I wrote you a letter.
I heard it just upset you.
Why don't you tell me?
How can I do this better?
Are you out there?
Do you hear me?
Can I call you?
Do you still hate me?
Are we talking?
Are we fighting?
Is it over?
Are we writing?
We're getting older.
But we're acting younger.
We should be smarter.
It seems we're getting dumber.
I have a picture
of you and me in Brooklyn.
On a porch, it was raining.
Hey, I remember that day.
And I miss you.

15. "Summertime Rolls" by Janes Addiction
Fell into
A sea of grass
And disappeared among
The shady blades...
Children all
Ran over me
Screaming tag!
You are the one!

He trips her as
Her sandals fail
She says stop!
I'm a girl...
Whose fingernails are made
Of mother's pearl...

Yellow buttercup
Helicopters
Orange buttercat
Chasing after
The crazy bee
Mad about somebody...

Me and my girlfriend
Don't wear no shoes
Her nose is painted pepper
Sunlight...
She loves me
I mean it's serious
As serious can be...

She sings a song and
I listen to what it says:
If you want a friend
Feed any animal...
There was so much space
I cut me a piece
With some fine wine
It brought peace to my mind
In the summertime...
And it rolled

Summer.... oh...
Oh.... the summertime rolls

16. "So Alive" by Love and Rockets
I don't know what colour your eyes are, baby
But your hair is long and brown
Your legs are strong, and you're so, so long
And you don't come from this town

My head is full of magic, baby
And I can share this with you
The feel I'm on a cross again, lately
But it's nothing to do with you

I'm alive
Oh Oh, so alive
I'm alive
Oh Oh, so alive

This drug makes me crazy
Makes me see you more clearly.
Oh, baby, now I can see you.
Wish I could stop,
Switch off the clock,
Make it all happen for you.

I'm alive
Oh Oh, so alive
I'm alive
Oh Oh, so alive

OOOOH
OOOOH

Don't know what colour your eyes are, baby
But your hair is long and brown
Your legs are strong, and you're so, so long
And you don't come from this town

My head is full of magic, baby
And I can share this with you
The feel I'm on top again, baby
That's got everything to do with you

I'm alive
Oh Oh, so alive
I'm alive
Oh Oh, so alive

17. "Vuela" by Jarabe de Palo (Spanish)
Mucho tiempo llevo sin oir
las olas romper en las rocas,
y eso que que estoy rodeado y
aquí todos gritan,
pero nadie escucha.
Mucho tiempo llevo sin hablar
un minuto con ellas,
y eso que estoy rodeado por mil
y un sonidos que flechan
mis pensamientos.

Por eso ahora querría ser un pájaro;
salir volando, subir muy alto;
Para un momento,
siéntate un rato y sin prisas hablemos.
Tómate un trago,
quizás haya algo que sepas y no sepa yo
Hoy te invito,
siéntate y cuéntame qué es para
ti el amor,
con tus ojos,
con tus manos cuéntame un sueño
en el que salga yo.

Que sentido tiene contar cosas
que casi nadie entiende,
pero he abierto los ojos y
he visto que es mejor ser lobo
solitario.
Que sentido tiene vivir tan solo
aunque tu estés aquí,
ya no merece la pena pasear a tu lado,
mirarte y no ver nada.

Por eso ahora querría ser un pájaro;
salir volando, subir muy alto;
con la mirada siempre fija p´alante;
sin importarme lo que halla debajo.
Por eso mueve... mueve el culo y márchate.
Por eso vuela... deja todo y lárgate... muy lejos

21. "I Can't Make You Love Me"
Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize - don't patronize me

CHORUS: Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't

I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holding me
Morning will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

CHORUS: Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't:cry:

40. That is a powerful song. Did you know that it was written by...
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 08:56 PM by PAMod
Mike Reid, who was an All-American football star at Penn State, and an All-Pro star for the Cincinnati Bengals?

I saw him in concert many years ago and he sang that song.

Picture this huge man, about 6'4" - 230, all hunched down at a piano in front of a symphony orchestra, turning out this tender hear-wrenching song that he had written.

Edited to note that Reid also wrote the song in reply #38 "Stranger In My House". I haven't thought of that guy in years and two of his songs made the same thread.

28. Ordinary World - Duran Duran
"Ordinary World"

Came in from a rainy Thursday
On the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly

I turned on the lights, the TV
And the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you

What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some are saying
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Here today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk

And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Every one
Is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one
Is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one
Is my world
Every one
Is my world

34. Several...
"Smooth Operator" by Sade and "Every Kind Of People" by Robert Palmer (and a couple of Power Station songs) reminded me of my oldest daughter's father. Sade because we first danced together to that song, and the others because he was (is) a huge Robert Palmer fan, and he rather resembled Robert Palmer back then. Steve Winwood's "The Finer Things" reminds me of him too, because it was one of my favorite songs when I was pregnant with my daughter.

Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" reminds me of my very favorite ex-boyfriend.

The entire "Murmur" album by REM reminds me of the guy I dated my senior year of high school, who had always been a good friend and continued to be for many years until we lost touch. I still have the cassette he taped for me from his record album.

"Jimmy McCarthy's Truck" by Wisconsin band Molly & The Heymakers and "What A Crying Shame" by the Mavericks remind me of a guy I dated only briefly while living in Wisconsin. It was never serious, but the songs remind me of him anyway. Oddly, I did have a serious boyfriend later during my time in Wisconsin - even thought he might have been "The One" - but I can't think of any songs that particularly remind me of him.

35. Last Goodbye
Jeff Buckley. I still get teary-eyed over that song.
I think the lyrics say everything.

This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it’s over
Just hear this and then I’ll go
You gave me more to live for
More than you’ll ever know

This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face
Why can’t we overcome this wall
Well, maybe it’s just because I didn’t know you at all

Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
You know it makes me so angry ’cause I know that in time
I’ll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye

Did you say ’no, this can’t happen to me,’
And did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
Saying maybe you didn’t know him at all
You didn’t know him at all, oh, you didn’t know

Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories
Offer signs that it’s over... it’s over

43. "I Think I'm Paranoid" by Garbage:

"I Think I'm Paranoid"

You can look, but you can't touch
I don't think I like you much
Heaven knows what a girl can do
Heaven knows what you've got to prove

I think I'm paranoid
And complicated
I think I'm paranoid
Manipulate it

Bend me, break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you
Bend me, break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

I fall down just to give you a thrill
Prop me up with another pill
If I should fail, if I should fold
I nailed my faith to the sticking pole

I think I'm paranoid
Manipulate it
I think I'm paranoid
And complicated

Paranoid
I think I'm paranoid

Steal me, deal me, anyway you heal me
Maim me, tame me, you can never change me
Love me, like me, come ahead and fight me
Please me, tease me, go ahead and leave me

Bend me
Break me
Anyway you need me
As long as I want you baby it's all right

Bend me
Break me
Any way you need me
As long as I want you baby it's all right.

44. Nobody Else In The World -- Don Henley
This song describes so well the asshole I dumped in 2001

You live in a house of mirrors
Reflecting your splendid isolation
You have so much of everything
Except for true consideration
The way you dance
The way you walk
The way you drive
The way you talk
The way you eat
The way you drink
The way you act
The way that you don’t think

It’s like there’s—
Nobody else in the world but you
Nobody else in the world
Nobody else in the world but you
In case you haven’t noticed
There’s lots of other people here, too

Hey now, did your momma teach you anything?
Some things still got to be respected
Is it a sign of the times, or is it just your callous heart?
How did you get so disconnected?

The way you push
The way you shove
The way you hate
The way you love
The lies you spin
The scenes you make
The grief you give
The space you take
It’s like there’s—

Nobody else in the world but you
Nobody else in the world
Nobody else in the world but you
In case you haven’t noticed
There’s lots of other people here, too

And now it’s time you did a little giving, baby
The world is not your plaything, no, no, no

(Solo)

Nobody else in the world but you
Nobody else in the world
Nobody else in the world but you
In case you haven’t noticed
There’s lots of other people here

Nobody else in the world but you
Nobody else in the world
It’s like there’s—nobody else in the world but you
In case you haven’t noticed there are lots of other people here, too

We had it on in the background sometimes and it was particularly fitting for her. I should have taken it as a warning.

47. John Prine's Yes, I Guess, They Oughta Name a Drink After You
I first heard it when I was involved with someone I had several pleasant drunken evenings with, followed by several not so pleasant drunken evenings where I wished she was around. Our break-up was actually amicable, we just weren't right for each other. I had a pretty good time at her wedding

51. Something - George Harrison
Always makes me think of my first boyfriend, we dated for about 9 years but careers split us up. It still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it. Also the entire first album of Led Zeppelin. He was in a rock band, so we had quite an extensive soundtrack for memories. Love ya, R.

So you wanted to take a break
Slow it down some and have some space
Well fuck you too!

Give me my money back
Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back

Wish I hadn't bought you dinner
Right before you dumped me on your front porch

Give me my money back
Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back
... and don't forget to give me back my black T-shirt

56. How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away)
How Can I Miss You (When You Won't Go Away)
by Dan Hicks

I've talked to your mother and I've talked to your dad,
They say they've tried but it's all in vain.
I've begged and I've pleaded, I even got mad,
Now we must face it, you give me a pain.

cho: How can I miss you when you won't go away?
I keep telling you day after day,
But you won't listen, you always stay and stay,
How can I miss you when you won't go away?

Out of three billion people, why must it be me?
OhOh why, oh why won't you cut me loose?
D Do me a favor and listen to my plea
I'm not the only chicken in the roost.

Your never-ending presence really cramps my style,
I dream that it won't always be the same.
At first I was attracted, but after a while,
Have you ever heard of a "hard to get" dame?"

57. We'll Sing in the Sunshine.
That was my 1st ex-husband's favorite, our marriage only lasted 1 year. Now I understand why it was his song.

There is another one (by Phil Collins) I seem to have blocked out the name of the song but it goes something like this: What did you think I would do at this moment. Did you think I would say things to hurt you cause you don't love me anymore?

It's so sad when you're in-love but know it won't last.

67. "Heart Turns to Stone" by Foreigner
One of my favorites, one of those that I can listen to on continuous loop for hours when I'm in the right mood. It symbolizes, to me, walking away from a bad situation and refusing to be vulnerable and stupid anymore. Best of all is the line "She's that kind of woman - she'll be fine on her own." And so I was.

All of this was many ages past, mind you.

Come to think of it, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" could describe the same jerk that I think of when I hear "Heart Turns to Stone." But the first is a survival/retribution anthem, while the second is just a complaint, so it's not as powerful to me.

From a much more compatible relationship, there's "Always On My Mind," the Elvis version. That one has a much more emotional effect on me. When I hear it at unexpected moments, it always comes across like a message from the dearly departed. But this too was long ago and far away, and almost all that's left now is the music.

72. "500 Miles" by the Proclaimers
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 02:55 AM by American liberal
To this day, if I ever hear that song, I immediately flashback to the first time he played it for me on the jukebox at the bar where I worked. AND IT'S SUCH A STUPID SONG!

on edit: added lyrics (and what's "haver" mean? Blowing chunks?)

Proclaimers - 500 Miles Lyrics
When I wake up, well I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.
When I go out, yeah I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you.

If I get drunk, well I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you.
And if I haver, yeah I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm walkin, yes I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who's walkin hard for you.
And when the money, comes in for the work I do,
I'll pass almost every penny on to you.

When I come home, (when i come home) oh I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you.
And if I grow old, well I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walkes 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door

na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la
na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la

When I'm lonely, well I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man whose lonely without you.
And when I'm dreaming, well I know I'm gonna dream,
I'm gonna dream about the time when I'm with you.

When I go out, (when i go out) well I know I'm gonna be,
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you.
and when I come home, (when i come home) yes I know I'm gonna
be,
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home with you,
I'm gonna be the man whose comin' home with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your door

na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la
na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la
na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la
na na na, na na na
na na na, na na na
lika lika lika lika lika la, la, la

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1,000 miles
To fall down at your do-o-or
