Today is Satchmo's Birthday.
He just turned 8. He should be in school by now, 3rd grade, but we decided to home-school him. Stop by and wish him a Happy Birthday!
:loveya:

5. It just made me laugh ridiculously.
In a good way, of course. :D

I was like, "Oh, it's Armstrong's birthday?" I had a nice little tribute reply cooking in my brain when I saw the part about "Satchmo" turning 8, and then I had to take another look.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I was cuddling with my old Siamese, Sesame. We were listening to Louis Armstrong on the stereo. All of a sudden, harleydad looked at us and said, "One day, I want a kitty named Satchmo!" Satchmo was born 1 day after Sesame's 19th birthday. Of course, we didn't know it until about 8 weeks later. Sesame has gone to Rainbow Bridge, but he gives messages to Satchmo about how to behave.

:loveya:

Satchmo's glad he gave you a good laugh!

26. Wow! Look at all those cool smileys!
Satchmo says thanks to you, Crook & Norman. And he really likes your Lounge Lizard picture. He LOVES to hunt for lizards out on the screened patio. This morning, I was getting the house cleaned up and ready to show (we're selling) and he deposited one right in the middle of the family room rug. It wasn't "used up" yet, so I took it back outside. Guess I spoiled the birthday party. Oops. He loves it when "toys" wander into his territory.

28. But... but... that kitty doesn't have baggy cheeks.
Some poor British DJ had trouble understanding African American accents, so he misheard "Satchel Mouth" as "Satchimo." Technically, Satchimo was his second nickname. ;)

How did he say it ... MEOW or more like MOWW? Wet kitty, lovely smell. :D

Eating and napping reminds me of a Garrison Keillor song ... starts like this (to the tune of Ode to Joy, but slower):

My old cat has eaten lunch and washed his hands and combed his hair.
Now he's sitting in the yard in just his pants and underwear.
When his nap is done, he'll sit out on the porch and watch the street,
Smoke an old cigar, and then come in and have a bite to eat.

Give Ginger a kiss for me, once he dries out.

He loves just about anything that used to be walking around. But we only feed him raw b/c he has IBD and can't tolerate cooked meat (or veggies or grains ... but that's beside the point). I'll break open another raw bison burger for him today. Ask Ginger if that would be OK. :hi:

41. What _can_ Satchmo eat, besides raw meat?
Ginger was diagnosed with colitis a couple of years ago, and it was really touch and go for two months: prescription food only, which he _loathed_. Now, he eats another (tastier) kind of prescription dry food; organic chicken (cooked, canned, but has to be imported from Italy by our very nice cat-food guy in Zurich). And, of course, the occasional treat of very bloody roast beef (:puke:) which he won't eat from a plate, but only in tiny strips from my hands.

Ginger says Satchmo can have anything he wants. These guys really stick together, don't they?

42. Nothing.
Well, he can tolerate SMALL amounts of chicken baby food, which he loves. And the bones and organs are ground up with his raw meat. He was on several prescription diets and had diarrhea for 7 1/2 years. Can't do dry at all -- too hard on the kidneys. (Abys are prone to renal amyloidosis.) Both the Abys got dangerously thin and seriously ill and we were at the end of our rope. Then I found a vet in CA who knows a lot about pet nutrition and she recommended canned or raw for them. We can't find a canned that the Abys can tolerate. So we started them all on raw last summer. Our then-vet discouraged it, but her medicine made them sicker and so did the Rx diets. Even the healthy kitties were puking up the Rx diets! So we got a new vet who encourages raw. And the vet who just did their dentals says they have "hot mouths", so raw is the best thing for them to keep their mouths healthy. They've both gained back all their weight and are extremely healthy. Sashka, our Russian Blue, was a dry food junkie and it took some real persistence to switch her. But now she chows down everything that's left in any of the bowls.

We've found some great side-effects of the raw diet -- extremely shiny fur, sweet breath, compact poops that don't stink, clean ears, and great skin (Satchmo used to get scabs all over his tummy). So we're sold on it completely, at least for our kitties.

I'm glad Ginger found something he likes and can tolerate. It's such a trick sometimes.

Satchmo says thanks to Ginger. He would love to share his bison. (Sabrina can't do bison or beef for some reason -- makes her puke.) Yeah, they do stick together. It's a cat thing.
