Drivers have numbers like football players and baseball players. Lots of fans of all sports wear gear with their player's numbers on them. It's no different for NASCAR fans.

how come when I listen in to the broadcasts I hear stuff like
"the 24 car" is doing this or that when they are not referring to what the actual car is doing, but what Jeff Gordon is doing.

It's bizarre. No announcer ever says during a game that the "Number 37 Running Back" is really in the groove today...

I'm just saying it sounds stupid. Take that any way you want. Like old Mark Martin used to say, "I am not a number, I'm a free man!"

6. The commentators also use the driver's names quite a bit.

I may be wrong, but it might be that referring to a car's number at times will help those new to the sport learn who's who on the track. And you're right, the commentators don't refer to football players by their numbers, but for the most part, the names are legible on the backs of their jerseys. While NASCAR drivers have their names on their car, it's usually just above the driver's door, and not readable for the most part durng a race.

And again, referring to a driver by his number really isn't the same as worshiping the number. Just sayin'.

7. Unless a "famed player"

most football commentators refer to the jersey numbers OR the position. Madden, for example, calls plays by position ("the linebacker was offside...") unless it's someone like Bruschi. NASCAR is no different when the annnouncers use the drivers' car numbers. :-)
