Just talked to a cameraman from "Sinclair Broadcasting"
Okay, I just had to get this off my chest...

Channel 13 from Portland, Maine (owned by Sinclair) is up here in my town covering more of the news that really matters...no kidding...they are covering a story of why pigeons are shitting all over Main Street. Seriously.

So, I was in the local coffee shop (they tried to interview one of the workers who gave them a resounding NO...). On my way out, I was mumbling under my breath about Sinclair's being evil corporate bullshit. Well, a cameraman outside heard me, and told me "Hey, if you've got something to say, you can say it to me!". Well, my co-worker freaked, but I turned right around and decided to talk to this young camera man.

I told him that his company was enabling "King Bush" (as I put it) to continue to advance his fascistic agenda. His company has NEVER had anything but positive things to say to this world raper. At the end of each broadcast, they have this buzzcutted asshole that gives the commentary, and it's always about the evils of the liberals, and how the Republicans are the only ones that can truly lead us (remember, it was Sinclair that aired the anti-Kerry documentary a week before the 2004 elections). I told him that instead of covering any of 1000 stories on how the Bushites are ruining this country, he's wasting his time covering pigeon shit.

Then he made a mistake...he told me that "Hey, I only work there". I told him that by working there, he is enabling a company to advance the fascist agenda of the Bushites. That definitely paused him. He told me to write to the station and let them know how I feel. I told them I have probably a dozen times, and that they've never responded (not once). He had absolutely nothing to say beyond that. I will say, he was polite, and said that I didn't have to hide how I felt, and that he was cool in talking to me. I truly think he had never thought about the politics of who he worked for, (it was his first camera job). I definitely got him thinking about that now :)

The best part was as I walked away. These two older guys that overheard the whole thing yelled "YES!!!" as I walked by. Made my day...(my co-worker had been whispering to them, and found out they were trying to figure out if they should say anything to the guy before I showed up).

What I learned...I will NEVER be silent in the face of fascism again...what does silence accomplish? Not a DAMNED thing. By saying something, I know I got the cameraman thinking...maybe that's how it happens...one person at a time...

2. He asked for it.
I wouldn't necessarily blame workers for having to work. However, he challenged you. And lost. :)

5. And I don't blame anyone for having to work...
But even in today's corporate world, we have the ability to make decisions on where we work. I used to work for a huge corporate entity (Bowater in South Carolina--a huge lumber corporation). I'd go into work, and noone would smile (and I mean that...everyone was miserable)...everyone knew that they were helping to rape the world, but just did it anyways. I lasted about six months, and got the HELL out of there, and promised myself that I would never work for anyone like that again. And I won't. My soul is more important to me than any job.

That's the best thing I've heard today. Thank you for this post.

I've been looking for a job to support myself and my husband while he is in graduate school. I found myself getting into finance because they had the highest paying entry level positions. All of my work experience has been in non-profits and freelance and this is honestly the first time in my life that I have to work a job just to pay the bills.

As I've been temping mostly in equity firms, I've discovered the gross reality of how these gambling narcissists massage and toy with the economy. It's revolting. At first I thought, I'll do what ever it takes to support my partner but as the days tick on I can't live in this environment. I can't ride the gravy train even for the noblest cause and not have it wear me down a person who cannot separate herself from how she makes her money and what that means in the larger picture.

I know I'm going on a rant here but I've been struggling with this issue for a while. I keep coming back to Brecht's play Mother Courage. If you're not familiar with it, it's all about what we're talking about here. You cannot make money of a war and think that you are somehow removed from it politically, emotionally, etc.

nice form today. Good for you for taking a stand.
