I am taking now applications for online boyfriend!
Please state why you think you would make a good online boyfriend for me, Xema.

:bounce:

(Oh, and I'll also consider applications from women and gays, 'cause Xema doesn't discriminate :P )

I'm kinda hard to forget!
I've got several months to figure it out.
I can't decide what I want to drive out there since I'm not doing the trip on 3 wheels.
If I take my pickup truck, I can camp out.
But if I drive my lil convertible it'll cost less in gas.

I'm so confused.

But you just can't not cheat on me, can you?

50. You should pick me
I'm a married middle-aged woman, but I think you should pick me anyway to be your online boyfriend.

1. I'm observant. For instance, I see that your photo has excellent color balance - the hair, the arches, and the terracota pot all go nicely together. The plant, the green things you're holding, and the chair all match quite well. And then the sky behind the arches, the shirt, and the table under the potted plant - perfect matches on the shades of blue. So you can be sure that if you log in with a new outfit or a new haircut, I'll notice and make a suitable complimentary comment.

2. I'm independent. If you don't write to me for days on end (or, like, ever), I'll be fine with that. I won't turn into one of those frighteningly insecure stalkerish boyfriends that expects you to spend every waking minute amusing me.

3. I'm learning a new piece on the flute. I'm not sure I'm hitting the high notes in tune. But it's okay, because I'm just an online boyfriend. So you can tell me how lovely it sounds, without actually having to suffer through it. It's a win-win situation.

4. My husband knows lots about cars, so if you have one and it breaks down, I can probably tell him the symptoms and give you an accurate diagnosis. It would be like you're married to one of the car talk guys - but without all the belching and stuff.

I never knew you could be so funny!! That AND you're a kick-ass photographer! If Xema rejects either of us straight women, I think I'll ask you to be my online boyfriend.

But only if Xema rejects us both. She will always be my first choice for online girlfriend. Luckily I know this won't bother an independent strong heterosexual woman like yourself.

I had ben on my computer at school for it a bit, and when I was doing a lecture about photojournalism and Kevin Carter, projecting the slides from my computer, I talked so long at one point the computer timed out and ben flashed on the overhead. It completely derailed our discussion. :)

278. I was just thinking about Kevin Carter!
Must be working in the disaster zone. But the strange thing is, I didn't know his name. I just remember that photo he took of the child and the vulture. I'm currently writing a sermon about how natural disaster affects us spiritually and psychologically. A hurricane on the Gulf Coast or a draught in Sudan, it's takes its toll on your soul. Kevin Carter was the extreme end of traumatized. :(

...

So I can see how ben could derail that!

I'm in Biloxi, and he's going to join the march in this area. I'm going to try to hook you all up with a volunteer project while you're passing through. My boyfriend is DUer usedtobesick (he used to be a Republican), and we've hooked up with DUer merh down here, so maybe we can do the mini-est of meetups when you vets pass through.

Hey, neither me nor my daughter has been in that area before. Is it super flat? If you were walking a long long way along the coast there, would you encounter hills, dunes, anything like that?

292. No, it's flat, flat, flat.
Hills start to kind of appear 15-20 miles inland. usedtobesick says you'll be walking along Route 90. As far as I can tell the only hills you might encounter will be bridges walking north to I-10 because the route 90 bridges are out. But he thinks you might be bussed around those parts, anyway.

But I've been back there many times since.

And my screenname is based on a conversation with a friend. He was telling me about a friend of his (a yuppie-type) who said to him that he fancies himself as an anarchist.

My friend laughed and said to the guy he was more like a "coffee-table book anarchist," and then I said, "Starbucks Anarchist" to modify it.

I like to hike, take photos (obviously), cook Mexican and Italian food, read DU obsessively, work long-term hurricane relief in Mississippi, and generally try to save the down-trodden/the nation/the planet from the forces of evil.

I'm also a babe (again, just like you!):

And of course I'd be very good to you, I'd make you laugh, I'd positively shower you with respect and love. And flowers, of course. (Well, pictures of flowers anyway, like this one taken at a hummingbird garden in Arizona.)

I'd shower you with jewels, but saving the down-trodden and fighting forces of evil just doesn't pay very well. (Sorry.)

228. Where in Arizona is the Hummingbird garden?
I've been to Southeast Arizona three times. I've had most but not all of the specialties there.

You're not into butterflies at all, are you?

If you are, so far my best sighting is a Lustrous Copper up by Tioga Pass in Yosemite!

Who are you working with for the hurricane relief? And do they need help? :bounce:

I'm pretty sure that's a Southeast Arizona specialty. But perhaps that was one you missed. (Good call in my book.) Anyway, that photo was taken at Boyce Thompson Arboretum.

Butterflies are very nice, though they haven't captured my imagination quite as vividly as birds and dragonflies. Probably because they mostly refuse to sit still for my camera! Still, I do appreciate the the pollination they provide to the plum tree in my yard. That, and transformative symbolism inherent in the butterfly. Here's one I saw in DC last September while marching to transform the current pResident's war machine:

I'm working with Hands On Network in Biloxi, and yes, they need help--but not during the month of March! It's not that the coast doesn't need the help, but volunteer lodging is stretched thin. Just our group will have 650 volunteers marching through during March. We normally have about 150 people which feels just about right for our space. It's going to be a madhouse here. And I work with volunteer housing issues (in part), so I know every agency is experiencing the same thing, from Texas to Alabama.

256. I've eaten mud snake
but that was in South Carolina, not Arizona. I haven't eaten rattlesnake, but mud snake is like really chewy chicken.

The deal with photographing butterflies is you have to be patient and move slowly. If you can manage to do both, you can sometimes get REALLY close. I used to net them in order to ID them, but after accidentally killing two, I found you can often get excellent looks just by sneaking up when they're nectaring.

It's raining here right now. For a week or so it was hot and sunny and I saw a few, but I think they're not going to be out in any numbers for a while.

I'm hoping to get the yard landscaped for butterflies. Sadly, I don't think the milkweed plants survived the winter, but I've got a bunch of other stuff that's looking like it might do really well for attracting butterflies.

That's a nice picture! :)

I've had alligator. It tasted like rubber. Never again!

With shooting butterflies, I have tried patience... and it tried me. :P The problem is, as a photo freak, I want to get a macro lens up to the butterfly wing. Without killing such beauty, of course. Butterflies really don't like humans putting macro lenses in their antennae, and who can blame them? It's very rude.

I hope someday to get another house where I can plant, plant, plant! I had one once, but just as t started to take off, I had to move. Very sad, but such is life. Anyway, I planted butterfly/hummingbird flowers all over the yard. My favorite was a red bee balm. By the fourth year one plant had spread to a small garden and was attracting both butterflies and the only hummingbird I ever saw in Massachusetts. As a bonus, when you dry bee balm, it smells heavenly, like orange and spice. I don't know if it'll grow in Northern California, but I highly suggest trying it. Another good flower is the one in my photos, a yellow coreopsis.

I'm sorry to hear it's raining. It's just another day in paradise here:

This is about 5 blocks down from where I work. :(

Not such a pretty picture. No one I work with can even identify this building. I like to imagine it was a fine Italian restaurant.

283. I love coreopsis
We're getting that, yarrow, butterfly bush (with the big purple flowers), milkweed... a whole bunch of stuff. Hopefully we'll get a diversity of butterflies. Usually all we get are Pipevine Swallowtails.

This is my friend's website:

www.martinreid.com

He's a meganerd when it comes to gulls, but he's got some nice bird and butterfly photos, among others. And he took me to the ranch where I saw the Rufous-Capped Warbler featured on the front page!

He also took me to the dump in Corpus where I had this bird:

Lesser Black Backed Gull. Never go to the dump with a devout gull fiend. It was really the grossest smell ever. Seriously. I was ready to go after about an hour, even though there were a lot of birds.

Books, Terry Prachet is closest. "Color of Magic" but I'm looking at two editions of the Whole Earth Catalog, a Pathophysiology text, the Barefoot Doctors Manual of Chinese Medicine and a terra cotta reproduction of a chinese warrior. I helped set up the Chico Cohousing community where several members of my family, (Mom, Godmother, ex, and daughters <9 and 12> live.

Listening to the space hour now. Queensland Heeler sleeping by my side. Kids asleep in next room after nightly poetry reading (Shel Silverstein). Oh I'm 40, single and just a bit padded. Ballroom dance classes Monday and Weds., farmers market EVERY saturday especially in a storm.

Ok......I take the unique thing a bit far but I can't make it stop so I go with it.

Because Queenslands do not understand pain. I've seen a Queenie take a full kick from a horse, fly ten feet, shake himself off and go back to herding it.

Mine refused all orders until they were associated with rewards. Now she won't take a hot dog from a toddlers hand unless it's pushed into her mouth. That, and she teaches preschoolers how to play fetch.

Back to work, I will return to pitch woo later. Sigh.

As a child we had a Climbing Cecil Brunner that my father planted next to our entry. An Anna's hummingbird, or several would nest in it and dive bomb us as we came and went. The rose and the bird between them did their best to take over the house but we just loved them both and it didn't work.
