LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Don Knotts, the skinny, lovable nerd who kept generations of television audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show," has died. He was 81.

Knotts died Friday night of pulmonary and respiratory complications at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, said Paul Ward, a spokesman for the cable network TV Land, which airs "The Andy Griffith Show," and another Knotts hit, "Three's Company."

2. Damn, Damn, Damn, Damn, Damn!
I loved Don Knotts. "Apple Dumpling Gang" was the shit and then Mr. Furley? Genius. The generation before mine knew him as Barney Fife and Mr. Limpet and all that jazz, but nothing said comedy to me than seeing Ralph Furley, in his multi-color leisure suits with matching kerchiefs, on the prowl

Goodnight, sweet comic prince

10. "Are you nervous?" Knotts: "Newp"
In the wayback era when Knotts was one of the regular "Man in the Street" interview subjects for the brilliant Steve Allen show.

RIP Don Knotts -- thanks for all the laughs

19. That's my first time seeing Don Knott's!
I loved Steve Allen and all his tv programs. He comes back to mind often when I watch Keith Olbermann.

Thanks for the "Newp" reminder!

28. His turn in "Pleasantville"...
...was simply outstanding.

His character was both a unique creation and tongue-in-cheek nod to his influence on the "innocent" days of TV sitcoms.

Strangely, I've met a lot of women (Mrs. Dannofoot at the forefront) who neither like his work nor find what he did funny. Is it a guy thing?
