1. My closets are reasonably organized...
…but that's because the clothes I actually wear (clean and dirty) are in piles on the floor. ;)

8. I organized my closets after my parents died
Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 02:01 PM by supernova
about ten years ago. It was grief therapy for me, having had so much anger and hurt to work off. Now, understand, I'm a messy person. So this was totally out of character for me.

After mom and dad died and I was alone in the house, I just started going through everything. Part of it was grief work, part of it was practical. This is a small house and there was literally no room for my stuff once I got back home.

So I cleaned out, donated clothes to the thrift store, washed the walls (we have mildew), repainted with mildewcide in at least one closet. I don't have walk-in closets but I think I do a good job of using the space I have.

I got those cloth hanging compartments and hung those up for sweaters and shoes.

I've kept them pretty well organized. And I've got it down to now where I clear out stuff about every 2-3 years. If I haven't touched it in that time, out it goes.

Now the fact that I leave my clothes on the floor is another matter entirely. :D

edit: The living room closet I turned into a craft/home improvement closet with lots of those Rubbermaid drawers. That works really well.

9. A mess. I have two closets and a stand-alone wardrobe organizer.
Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 02:02 PM by RebelOne
One closet is solely for winter clothes, but is so crammed that I have to keep giving things away to charity, plus I keep running out of hangers. The other two are for summer and spring clothes and are also packed. I live in a mobile home, which is limited on closets. But even when I lived in an apartment with a walk-in closet, I still had a problem with over-crowding. I guess I just buy too many clothes.

Also, the shelves are loaded with shoe boxes and most of those shoes I don't wear because they felt good in the store, but after wearing them for an hour or so, I was in pain.

The bedroom desk serves as storage for often-worn clean clothes after the Sunday laundry event. Sometimes they don't get put up until the next week's laundry.

14. Everything is first ironed and then hung up.
If the pants (or skirt) and blouse are a set then they hang together. Otherwise, I have (in order): jackets, sweaters, blouses, pants, skirts and dresses. Shoes are kept in their original boxes until worn, then cleaned and polished. Belts hang on another hanger, unless they came w/ the pants or skirts-then they hang on the same hanger as the pants or skirt they came with.

The shelves have boxes neatly stacked up and clearly labelled on the outside, so that I can easily find everything. And everything hanging in my closet is also color coordinated-black pants together, brown pants together, etc.

18. Mom?
I can do the organizing, but it takes about two weeks for it to return to the normal state of affairs around here. And the time between doing the organizing has gotten longer and longer. Not even sure its "between" anymore. Think I gave up.

35. You just have to make yourself do it.
I attended a lecture many years ago where the speaker stated that it takes the average person six weeks to make something a habit, whether good or bad. So, for six weeks I leave myself notes in places I will look in reference to what I need to do. After the six weeks is up I always realize that I don't need the notes anymore-I'm on autopilot.

29. Closets? what's that I'm a married man
with a wife fond of clothing. When we moved into this house there were three small but aduquate closets. I thought it would be hers, mine, and an overflow, since then I've been working on the married mans theory of closet space and how clothing expands to fill existing space.

Since moving here I've been relagated to approximately two square feet of closet space and my wife has the rest, I don't want to ralk about hangers.

30. Not bad.
I'm actually pretty good about getting rid of clothes that are ill-fitting, outdated, etc. My husband and I have one closet for two of us, and it's not a walk-in, but I read once that most people really only mainly wear about a "foot" of clothing measuring horizontally in a closet, and I think that's often true for me.

32. My closet is very organized
I hang the clothes according to color, from darkest to lightest. I'm not obsessive/compulsive or anything; I organize it that way because it's easier to find things.

36. Funny thing. I keep finding an errant shoe outside the closet.
I have WAY too many shoes, and I think they sometimes leap out of the closet just to get away from the crowd.

I am not an organized person (okay, I am a scientist; does that make sense?) Once I took two left shoe boots with me to the gym to change into after the workout; and one time I took a left and right boot to work (to replace running shoes worn on the bus) of two different pairs (very different) all because my closet is so disorganized.

Don't even ask me about the clothes. I have clothes that are 30 years old. I hate to throw away anything that is still in good condition. Yet I give away stuff every year to charity.

ACKKKK!

Now, shall we talk about my computer room, where I conduct my professional work? Or shall we just call the fire department?

Is there any other way? Why have closets, unless one is going to have some kind of useful system, like a filing cabinet or library?

40. Pretty good.
Summer clothes are currently in plastic zipper bags and space bags, the luggage is nested and stacked, and the rest is either hung up, folded, or rolled and in the canvas boxes I use for sweaters and knits.

And 90% of the laundry is clean and folded.

DH has a freestanding wardrobe that he prefers to the closet, so I don't have to worry about his clothes. I just fold 'em and leave on his side of the bed and he puts 'em away. (but his are kind of stuffed in, so he usually looks like a wrinkle bomb hit him. Oh, well. I try.)
