4. There is one and only one
And that is the right to bear arms. Shit I think machine guns should be legal. Ever pay for ammo for a sub-auto? Ten seconds will set you back $50. Problem solved.

8. I wouldn't consider that solely a conservative issue...
only half of all gun owners are repubs. That means half of us aren't.

Gun owning, nonhunting, non-repub here...

11. I agree with the right to bear arms, but with very modest limitations
Just as the 1st Amendment is not absolute, neither should the 2nd.

20. They can't at present, of course...as you're probably aware...
Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 01:17 PM by benEzra
since to own any automatic weapon in the U.S., you have to pass what amounts to a Secret-level government security clearance (sans only the polygraph) as required under the Title 2/Class III provisions of the National Firearms Act of 1934, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms gets to inspect the gun at your home once a year. You also need to be fairly wealthy, since civilian-transferable automatic weapons run from $5000 or so for a cheaply made pistol-caliber submachinegun to $15,000 for an AK-47 to $100,000 or more for some full-size .30 caliber machineguns.

Of course, I suppose criminals could smuggle in machineguns disguised as routine cocaine shipments, or could find an expert machinist with a fully equipped machine shop to manufacture them domestically. But to own one legally, you have to jump through a lot of hoops.

21. In that case asking for legal machine guns is a moot point
since they already are, and I think Taverner was looking for those restrictions to be eased solely on the base of ammo price. Yet, someone who's decided that they've nothing to live for won't necessarily take expense into account when they massacre a school.

24. Meh. If you wanted to go out in a blaze of glory
It would be easier and cheaper to strap a dozen moltovs to your body and set yourself alight.

Or make napalm. You can do that with kitchen ingredients.

Hell, there's a lot of cheaper ways to commit mass murder than with machine guns.

25. Yes, but would they be as satisfying?
It's not a blaze of glory until there's a gunfight, or at least there doesn't seem to be in this country.

How many suicide bombings have we had in this country, next to multiple-shootings with semi-autos?

29. True...
But still I would argue that a auto is just as dangerous as a handgun...

Again, keep in mind I don't own a gun, nor do I intend to

But part of my rationale is that should the NeoCons really get their way, they'll come gunning for all of us. And it would be nice to shoot back.

22. I've also been giving this one a lot of thought.....
and decided that I am also letting go of my gun-control happy past.

While I believe that guns are inherently dangerous and one of the worst inventions of modern man, I also have come to believe that most violent gun crimes committed in the US are committed with illegally purchased and stolen guns.

As for accidents in the home, I think there should be laws mandating safety classes for gun owners and child-safety locks and/or gun owners with children should use locked storage boxes to store the gun in the home, but I do not believe that these types of laws infringe on anyone's 2nd Amendment rights.

(My husband has to keep a firearm in the house because of his job, and this made me really uncomfortable at first, but it is stored unloaded on the top shelf of our closet (our daughter is far too young to understand it and way too small to get to it at this point) with a safety lock on the trigger.)

I want my civil liberties kept intact, so I am starting to understand the logic of NRA types, although they are still generally nuts, lol.

26. Here's a strange statistic
The UK and Switzerland have the same gun-related crime rates. Both countries have equal sized populations.

UK bans guns. Switzerland requires everyone to own one.

Basically gun control has no effect on crime, but also guns do not deter crime either.
