Who else is eating paczki today?
One of the great things about being of Polish descent is that while New Orleans has its Mardi Gras, every Polish bakery and most Catholic parishes, of which there are dozens in the Saginaw/Bay City area, has paczki for sale this morning.
I'm doing a raspberry-filled one with my coffee right now. Each one is 750 calories and I've got another half-dozen waiting for me out in the kitchen. Hence the phrase "Fat Tuesday."
John
Trivia: "Paczki (poonch-key)" is plural. A single one is a "poonchek." But who ever deals in singles?

3. They eat them, but not necessarily in correlation with Fat Tuesday.

I've had them before and it wasn't Lent or Mardi Gras or anything like that. They're called "pampushky" here. Huge Ukrainian population and cultural institute here. That's where we bought them. Aren't they just lard and flour with some filling? I wouldn't eat them too often.

I've lived in Chicago for 10 years (Chicago having a huge Polish population) and I've never once had paczki. Until this morning. Yummmmm. But I wouldn't want to eat it all the time.

6. Your first one, eh? Congratulations!

And you're right about not eating them every day -- three of 'em equals the daily caloric intake for an average adult (not that we have any of those around here).
There is also no known way to eat paczki neatly. I absolutely trashed the plate Polly delivered it on. I also needed a napkin and a quick hand-washing afterwards. Now I'm just sitting here waiting for the sugar to kick in.

Paczki are proof that God is Polish (or maybe Ukranian) and that She loves us and wants us to be happy.

5. Had my lemon-filled this morning
Paczki Day is huge here in SE Michigan. My student intern from Virginia had his first today -- he never heard of them until today.

7. They were around the office, but I can't eat them
They are too rich-they upset my stomach and make my teeth hurt.
