Large Jars Of Peanut Butter Banned In Tennessee Prisons
NOT for the reasons YOU are thinking! :rofl:

<snip>

Large jars of peanut butter have been banned in Tennessee's 15 state prisons because inmates were hiding guns, drugs and other contraband in the 18-ounce containers, state corrections officials said.

The ban came after an investigation revealed that George Hyatte, a prisoner in Knoxville, had concealed a smuggled cell phone in a jar of peanut butter at the prison where he was being held and used it to coordinate a deadly breakout while being taken to court in August.

"After today, (all) such containers shall be considered contraband and will result in disciplinary action," Correction Commissioner George Little said in a statement.

Contraband is smuggled in by visitors and sometimes by prison staffers. Some prison employees have been fired for bringing inmates contraband that included drugs, weapons and even street clothes.

New smaller cell phones have become the hot-ticket item in the cell block, experts have said.

State Sen. Doug Jackson, D-Dickson, who has complained about the prison system's failure to control contraband, thinks the peanut butter ban is necessary because it's too easy to conceal items in it.

"It affects the safety of the inmates, the employees and it affects the safety of the public," Jackson said.

Confiscation of the peanut butter jars followed the discovery of guns and drugs hidden in some of them. Inmates bought the sandwich spread from prison commissaries.

Prison officials plan to return the department's 4,600 18-ounce jars of peanut butter to the vendor and replace them with 1-ounce condiment packets.
