Hidden Treasure

An important bit of information has come to my attention.

A DUer who goes by the handle "oneighty" has shown me that we have hidden treasure right below our eyes here at DU. Each and every one of you has this treasure located inside your skulls. The treasure is your life experience.

You may think that you've had a bad life. I get that vibe from some people here. But your stories are priceless. Write, people. Just put it down on paper. You may have a book some day and then we can all celebrate your life.

1. I've thought of doing that before

Believe it or not, I had a pretty cool life. I wouldn't say it was or has been anything way out there, but a lot of people are surprised to hear of some of the things that have gone on in my life so far. I come across as pretty dull these days, but I just don't do what I used to do.

2. See what you can come up with

You may know about my "Stories from the Road." I've been writing those for about a year now and I went back and searched the archives for all those stories and saved them to disc when it occurred to me that I might have something some day if I keep writing.

My life experience is indeed inside my skull.....

I have shared major parts of it privately here, to some people I am really close to....

But there are parts that I don't want to dwell on.....that I want to forget......

And there are glorious parts too....but those are private as well.....

I am not an open book......

7. Yes

I guess that not all of us are compelled to share our life stories. But keep a journal. You never know. Some day, maybe, you will want to leave something behind. Remember Emily Dickenson. She only had 4 poems published during her lifetime. Yet when she died they found over 2000 poems in her home and she has become one of the world's great poets. A treasure.

And you are only in your thirties. By the time you reach 70 or 80 you may have a book together. We aren't all authors, but we all have stories.

Maybe a "Life Experience" board?

Some DU posters are, by necessity, consumed with their personal emotions and problems. Meaningful analyses of their situations may not be available for years. I have in the past been in the same boat. ;)

Besides I'm just speaking figuratively. I don't know if DU will survive another year let alone 30 or 50. But your experience will touch some people even if you only publish a few copies and distribute them to your family and friends.

The Voyages of The Vicky Mary (and other stories) about his life as a fisherman


and Kazuko which is about his service in Japan in the 1950s and Kazuko , the Japanses girl he loved (loves)


His stories are priceless , I adore him as a friend

Are you referring to my need to make more money or my "Stories from the Road?" Or maybe something else?

I have a better paying position now at the same company that I was working for and I still write "Stories from the Road." I don't know if that answers your question. I'm not sure what you are referring to. Please forgive my crappy memory.

I don't know how his book hasn't gotten picked up by a publisher. I see some of the crap that gets published out there and here 180 is having to self publish a superb work of art. It just ain't right.

I was very impressed by my friend oneighty. Over the last year or so I've started doing something like what he has done. I didn't know of his work until recently, though. It is very inspiring.
