How old do you think this woman is?
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 10:09 AM by Lorien

She's someone that I know who has been a bit anxious about aging. Personally, I don't think she has very much to worry about. :-)

she's 43.

I think she could pass for someone in their late 20s personally. So do many of the men who have been hitting on her. ;-)

18. Thank you!
I think so as well. I was hoping that others here would agree and I could have sent her a link to the thread to cheer her up-but now I think she'd need a therapist after seeing what some have written here.

She's Native American, too-and lives in Arizona; it's amazing that her skin has faired so well in that dry air!

I guess I won't be sending her this thread to make her feel better. :-(

19. It's not harsh to say she looks her age.
Her face has a quality that says "I'm not a naive twenty-something." It also reflects a happy person and that makes her look younger and fresher than some people do at her age.

By the way, many women in their mid-40s don't have wrinkles or sagging skin.

44. I disagree; it's harsh because perfect skin and thick gray free hair
isn't the norm for 45 (or 43, which is her age). The vast majority of people in their forties have crows feet, sagging skin, slightly drooping eyelids or puffiness, the beginnings of "marionette" lines, gray hairs, thinning hair, uneven skin tone, and often age spots-some even WITH cosmetic surgery. It's harsh because our youth obsessed culture and media now DEMANDS youthful perfection from women at every age, and it's a standard that 95% of us can't live up to.

52. Wow. I guess I hang out with an unusual crowd.
I didn't say there weren't people who had sagging skin in their mid-40s, I said that many do not. As for the laundry list of traits you mentioned, I've seen half of them on women in their 20s. Smoking cigarettes, and sunbathing too much can do that to you. Genes play a role too. From what I've seen the shift to most women having those signs of aging is around 50-55.

As for women feeling the pressure to look younger than their age, on that I agree with you. That they continue to care about it is what I don't understand. I know women who aren't comfortable leaving the house without wearing make-up and that's just weird to me.

for people who take care of themselves (and very often aging is hereditary). i'm lucky in that both my parents looked remarkably young and beautiful. my late father still had black hair sprinkled with grey when he died at 80 three years ago.

27. I think it's the way you phrased the question
Everyone knows that when questions like this are asked the person is probably older than they appear, so they adjust their numbers. If she actually looked 40, then most responders would have guessed 50.

Your friend looks amazing - she's probably worried about her looks because she spends too much time next to you and no one notices her... :)

I don't let it bother me. Nor should she. She's beautiful. But I hope she has beauty within... That's what counts not what we "harsh DUers" think. Yowza, I thought honest opinions were wanted. I thought she was 38, but if I were her friend I may say 28 to make her feel good.

34. Age is certainly a bad thing in America.
Try to go job hunting when your over 30- or worse, 40. I have many friends who have been unemployed for years after being "downsized" because they are "over qualified" (too old) for every job they interview for. Our culture worships youth.

My honest opinion is that she looks 28. I'm just shocked at the standards for "youthful" around here (and I've seen your photos; no way in hell you could ever pass for 45. Someone was just trying to hurt your feelings, imho).

And I do agree on the point that we can be a pissy lot.

What happens is I had my daughter at 19. She is now 16 and many of her friends' parents are in their mid forties and are surprised to learn that I am not. But maybe they were just thinking how young I look for my age. ;)

I apologize.

Seriously, she has about the same number of little tiny lines around her eyes, and looks like she dyes her hair (like me; and I just fucked up btw--and hate my new color with a passion...but, that's beside the point)---so, I guess my age: 42. To be safe, I wrote 40-45.

I knew I was right.

45. Some women age well
Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 04:14 PM by hyphenate
Others don't. She looks pretty good, though. I'd say she's in her early forties, though -- the 40s give you a look that's a little wiser, a little more settled. Up until that point, you're just cruising through.

I find that women with children age a little more conspicuously than women without children. I guess it's because they need to "grow up" faster than those of us with no such responsibilities. My sister looks at least ten years older than she is, and she's exactly 5 years younger--to the day--than I am. Her face is covered with wrinkles and lines, and her hair has never really been cared for well. And smoking and alcoholism has certainly not helped, either.

PS: After reading the thread, I would tell you to tell your friend that for living in the heat and sun, she looks fantastic!! I would also tell her not to worry about what age she looks, because she is really quite beautiful, regardless of what age she is. I know women have it more difficult than men when it comes to keeping themselves looking good, as well as taking comments about it, but she won't have that problem for years to come. Another thing that she can think about--horizontal wrinkles or lines are GOOD lines, vertical lines are not kind. Horizontal lines indicate a life lived with happiness, as they denote laugh lines, dimples and other signs of joy.

47. "Horizontal lines are good lines" I like that!
Though I had more lines at 26 than she has in that pic, I admit. I agree; parenting can really age a person. my best friend will turn 40 in a few months and she's having a tough time dealing with it because she often gets mistaken for 50! But she has two boys under 5, she's British, and she loves the outdoors-not a great combination for combating the signs of aging!

early 40's... There is a "worldliness" emanating from her face. She doesn't have the "look" of a twenty-something.. These days it's hard to tell 30's from 40's..but the fact that she's "worried" tells me she's 40-ish..

I'm terrible at guessing ages. By the question, I'm guessing she is older than her appearance lets on.

Maybe late 30s, but probably early 40s. I'm only guessing by the question. Just to see her, I'd guess early 30s.

On Edit:

Here is another photo from her site. She doesn't look as glamorous as in the first picture, but one can still tell she is beautiful and, by the age you've given us, she holds her age very well.

I worry as I get older, too. I take time to do a few "Project Me" things, such as give away clothes and update. Throw out old make-up and replace with fresh new colors. I change my exercise routine, make new dishes and revitalize myself. I always feel better- and younger!

62. Well, you should tell her from me that I think she's gorgeous!
I know whereof I speak. My wife is 46 and couldn't be more beautiful. You're as old as you feel and as beautiful as you behave. Tell her that, too.

My, my, my :wow:

:loveya:

she knows how to be photographed, the first thing you learn in your 40s is that even tho bangs ain't in style do the bangs anyway, it saves boocoo bucks on botox

this is why madonna always had so much hair in her face prior to her lift

67. Lorien--it's the wisdom and maturity in her face that give away her age.
It's not wrinkles or lack of, or whatever.

I'd place her at near forty, and that's not an insult. She just obviously doesn't have the starry look of a teenager or someone in their young twenties.

She's a good looking woman, what difference does it make how old she is? There are some twenty year old girls who'd give anything to look like she does now.

68. What I find disturbing about your thread is the implicit
assumption that a woman needs to be reassured she looks younger than her age in order to feel good about herself. You state that that's the reality of living in a youth obsessed culture, but aren't you just perpetuating that obsession here?
