Smith breaks NFL career sacks record
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Bruce Smith gave some meaning to another disappointing season with the Washington Redskins by claiming the title of NFL sack king.

Smith trapped Jesse Palmer for a record-setting 199th sack and Tim Hasselbeck threw two touchdown passes as the Redskins beat the New York Giants 20-7 in a meaningless game that ended with only a couple of thousand people and few snowmen in the stands.

"I don't know what to feel like," Smith said after the Redskins (5-8) snapped a three-game losing streak and eliminated the Giants (4-9) from the playoff race.

"I have been playing this game a long time," said the 40-year-old who wore a burgundy robe with the inscription "All Time" on the front. "I've had a lot of surgeries. A lot of very important people were instrumental in prolonging my career." >>>more

1. I hate to say it...
But he only holds the sacks record because they didn't count them when David 'Deacon' Jones was playing.

Does anybody else remember the Fearsome Foursome?

4. The 'unofficial' count
comes out to over 300.

BUT...

That was gotten by taking one season and multiplying by the number of seasons he played. So, break out your salt.

Greatest Defensive End of all time, I says.

5. thought maybe someone had reviewed the game films or something
he was a little ahead of his time in his physicality - long arms, rangy, fast, etc.

7. You think someone would
But as far as I can tell, no one has, officially or un.

Of course, when he played, the 'head slap' was legal.

9. well, films of all his games my not exist.
did you know that there is no film of Super Bowl 1? so little was thought of it's significance at the time that it was erased after the game. what you see when you watch something about the game are out takes and replays saved from other sources.

10. Incredible!
Of course, today, in the 'Information Age'(tm), we save everything, it seems unusual that such things aren't saved.

6. Helluva record to have.
Pressuring the quarterback, WITHOUT blitzing, makes all of the difference in a game. A good, sacking, DE is the best defensive player a team can have.

8. I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE
Freeagency....

I am a longtime Skins fan. But sometimes it's hard to care..
I am reduced to rooting for a uniform.... I lost track of how many QBs we've had since Rypien left. and most of my favorite Skins who are still playing are on other teams at this point.

Bailey
Arrington and some others are good drafted talent....
but it's just a matter of time till they leave.

11. Finally!
Bruce Smith is from the Va.Beach area (as are a lot of pros) and for that I think it is cool. He does a lot of charity work in the community and seems like a really great guy but I was never really a fan. I didn't like the old Bills teams or anyone on them for that matter.

Congrats though.
