Who likes Grits with butterflies?
I went to just about the perfect wedding this weekend. Almost every single detail was perfectly planned and executed. The theme was butterflies which I will get to in just a moment.

My best friend of over 25 years got married and the whole thing was planned by his fiancee. There was no actual wedding party (no groomsmen and such) and the bride's best friend didn't know any of the details until two days before the wedding. His son from his first marriage was his best man.

My buddy has always loved grits. The dinner featured grits with tomatoes, mushrooms, and shredded cheese to make a sort of jambalaya dish. I had never heard of it-something I was teased about by my native southerner friends.
I ate grits for the first time in probably 30 years....not as bad as I remembered actually.

Okay so now for the butterflies. They were a vital part of the ceremony--three beautiful girls in white dresses carried a hat box sized box into the end of the ceremony and SLOWLY opened the box to release the butterflies. the wedding was held a great little place on a river by an old mill. They were married on the large flat rocks with the creek babbling by a few feet away. For a "non traditional" wedding it never got silly or sloppy as they often do. So the preacher read the following that was on the back of the programs (or whatever they are called).

As The Native American Legend Goes:

If anyone desires a wish to come true, they must capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since they make no sound, they can't tell the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit. So by making the wish and releasing the butterfly, it will be taken to the heavens and be granted. Today this couple has chosen to keep this tradition by performing this unique form of Indian celebration. Please come and join them in their wish!

They fluttered up and away and we saw several of the 20 or so that were released throughout the rest of the day. It was so touching that I saw many grown men with a tear in their eyes.

At the end of the reception instead of throwing rice or birdseed they exited to the cabin next door through a blizzard of bubbles-the little containers of bubble stuff had butterflies on the top. The bride had also made "Butterfly paper" which is a paper mache with the seeds of a "Butterfly plant" IN the paper. You plant it and a flower that attracts butterflies into your yard grows. There were many such nice touches all through the wedding.

Family pictures were on displayed all around the cabin/reception area and the sheet music to the song they danced to "All my Life" by the Beatles was on display on the piano in the parlor.

A beautiful sunny spring day. Everything was just so wonderful.

I asked about the butterflies later....turns out they were frozen alive and FedEx-ed in for the event.

1. Ahhh . . .
your friends wedding sounds lovely. I can never understand why people want all the glitz/glamor/stress of those big traditional wedding.

Wishing your friends good luck as they travel the path of life together.
