Bubblegum pop songs you're not afraid to love.
Edited on Fri Jun-09-06 09:46 PM by Finnfan
I have an XM satellite radio, and while flipping channels this week I heard Hanson's "MMMBop" twice. Each time I found myself singing along. To me, it ranks right up there with Abba's "Dancing Queen" for great pop songs that make me happy.

So come on, don't be afraid to admit it. What's you favorite? Don't worry, you're among friends, and if there's one thing the Lounge is known for, it's for tolerance to other people's musical tastes.

"Nth Degree" by Morningwood comes to mind. I love that band's name and would really dig hearing a commercial radio DJ say it.

7. Buttercup
Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

"I'll be over at ten", you told me time and again
But you're late, I wait around and then (bah dah dah)
I run to the door, I can't take any more
It's not you, you let me down again

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time, and I'll make you happy
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be home
I'll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you'd just let me know (bah dah dah)
Although you're untrue, I'm attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so

(Hey, hey, hey!) Baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little time and I'll make you happy
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be home
I'll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooo-oo-ooo, ooo-oo-ooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

I-I-I need you-oo-oo more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) Buttercup, don't break my heart

36. A little research on the topic will uncover that it is in fact
entirely acceptable to include it in the genre. I certainly am not the first to do so, and people will often debate about what bubblegum pop is precisely anyway.

17. Andy Kim- Baby I love you....
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 12:04 AM by scoey1953
Song by Andy Kim called Baby I love you-

http://www.bookaband.com/mp3s/AndyKim-BabyILoveYou-9228.mp3

When I first heard that song I had a crush on this cute NYC girl who I met at a campsite in
upstate NY near Lake George. She had cute pigtails..and very dark brown hair. A bunch of kids from
the different camp grounds would get together and hang out at this place we called "The Shack"
and listen to a juke box they had there. I think that song may have been on it...I later bought
the 45 rpm. I did write to her and she wrote back to me, after we left those camp grounds but
then we stopped writing. There was no chance either of us would be spending another summer up
there. I think we spent a week there just after Memorial Day. I don't even recall her name.
I think at the time I had been in the 6th or 7th grade. She was a year younger than me, and she and her sister had come up from the Bronx to spend a week there as well. I think she knew how I felt about her, as she felt the same about me..but ya know, being kids and all. I do know that song carried
me though a few good years of memories and emotions. I suppose its occasionally played on an
"Oldies station"..but I don't listen to the radio too much these days, not with having an Ipod
and access to the internet.

29. There is a smallish, but devoted Carpenters" following here in the Lounge.
The other day there was a thread about musicians who died before their time and Karen's name came up with many loving responses.

I will echo your vote for The Carpenters and simply add if she was that good with his bland choices (I give Richard credit for being a risk-taking arranger, though), imagine what she could have done with riskier material or the standards like Cole Porter...

‘Cuz I just got somethin’ that I need to say
You ever heard about that thing?
I mean that reeeal thing?
I mean sometimes when you just can’t even sleep, you can’t think
You just lose yoself, wrapped all up in it
Hmm, baby, you got me mesmerized
Let me sing it for you

You don’t know
What you do to me
Let me tell ya
How ya make me feel
I need yo lovin’
It’s so good to me
I can’t even sleep (Oh!)
Boy, you got me weak (Yeah!)
My heart is on fire since you put that thang on me, ooh
You put that thang on me, that thang, baby

Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby mesmerized
(I said 1…2…3…4 hit it, uh!)
Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby mesmerized

You got me mesmerized
I don’t know what to do
Baby got me hypnotized
I think I’m in love with you
You got me so caught up
Baby, I’m spellbound
I’m floatin’ on cloud nine
And I don’t think I’m comin’ down
Don’t you know
What you do to me?
Baby, baby, it’s like ecstasy
I can’t even sleep
Boy, you got me weak
My heart is on fire since you put that thang on me, ooh!

Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby mesmerized (Ooh baby)
(I said 1…2…3…4 hit it, uh!)
Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby mesmerized
(Baby, I’m hypnotized, yeah)

I just can’s understand, I can’t understand
You got me lookin’ so crazy, baby
You got me lookin’ so crazy right now
Make me wanna clap my hands (My hands)
Make me wanna stomp my feet (My feet)
Make me feel real, real good (Real good)
When you put that thang on me
Let me tell you now

I can’t even sleep
Boy you got me weak
Your love is so sweet
Said you knock me off my feet

Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby mesmerized
(I said 1…2…3…4 hit it, uh!)
Ooh baby, baby, baby, baby mesmerized

You’ve got me mesmerized
Don’t know just what to do, I’m hypnotized
Oh you got me, oh you got me, yeah, yeah, yeah
C’mon! Ain’t it funky now!

You got me mesmerized
I don’t know what to do
Baby got me hypnotized
I think I’m in love with you
You got me so caught up
Baby, I’m spellbound
I’m floatin’ on cloud nine
And I don’t think I’m comin’ down
Don’t you…

46. Pretty much anything by Tommy James and the Shondells
(and TJ's early solo career as well...) They're the kings of the genre IMHO. Actually, I'm a big fan of most of the original era of stuff they call "bubblegum" (you know, Kasenatz-Katz/Buddah Records stuff and the like). I'm a big Monkees fan, too (a good deal of their stuff defies the label "bubblegum", though) and the musically sweet, lyrically dark Poppy Family as well.

There's a fine line between pop/rock and bubblegum pop. Certainly The Monkees, the Archies, The Click Five, and Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth fit the definition. All very enjoyable.

Some artists up for debate might be artists like Abba, The Ramones, The Veronicas and Hope 7. Hope 7 isn't very popular, and has clever lyrics - so that works against them being in the genre. These are brilliant artists regardless.

but I have an infection in my ears for Len's "Steal My Sunshine." I'm sure part of it has to do with the sample from "More More More," but it's a fun ass-shaker. Plus, if you ever want to annoy the person riding with you in a car, nothing tops that.
