1. Take it from a musician...wear earplugs. Lesson within.
I went to the second Lollapalooza tour in Philadelphia. This was the day Rage Against The Machine decided to protest music censorship by standing on stage naked, with "PMRC" written on their chests (one letter per guy) and tape over their mouths, while a guitar or bass (I forget which) was leaned against an amplifier. They proceeded to let it feedback for 20-30 minutes at top volume, then walked off the stage.

That was the day I forgot my earplugs. I'm pretty sure I'm still suffering from that one.

5. Small club show =/= outdoor arena show.
Yeah, some small club shows have left my hearing wanting (:yoiks:) but an ampitheater show? Totally different thing.

That said, I'd actually encourage you to wear plugs if you're apprehensive. Better to have and not need than to need and not have and all that.

Also:
SLAYER!

3. Depends on the concert
If it's Barry Mannilow, I'd say earplugs are a necessity.

8. Loudest concert I ever went to?
Steely Dan. But you know, I also didn't want to be there.

I put cigarette filters in my ears. They are surprisingly effective.

This didn't answer your question, but I didn't really think you wanted an answer.

10. that's very funny!
I wouldn't have thought Steely Dan would be the loudest, not by a long-shot.

Loudest I've been to? Tie between X (back when my ears were less abused)and a recent Horror-Pops show. (after years of NOT seeing loud shows.) My ears rang for hours.

I'd wear the plugs. That way you'll be able to hear music for years to come.

11. Yes!
In my youth, I worked in music venues. And I've gone out to many a show. Usually in small clubs--but things can get loud there, too. (Wadded-up cocktail napkins will do in a pinch.)

When I attended this show, I sat on the front row! Perhaps the damage was worth it.

I worked two Ted Nugent shows. NOT worth it.

14. Heh I'm also going to a concert tonight!
I'm going to see Radiohead at one of my favorite venues - the Greek Theater in Burbank. Fortunately it's an outdoor venue. :woohoo:

15. My cousin is a hearing aid technologist
she is seeing more and more younger people with hearing loss because of music (musicians, years of personal music players and loud stereos).

Earplugs once in a while, or a hearing aid all the time?

a combination of working with loud machinery, shooting guns and yes, many, many concerts in my youth, I highly recommend the plugs. You don't know what you got until it's gone. :headbang:

and i LIKE loud.

boy, if i had had earplugs that time i sure as hell would have used them.

all the way across the stadium from them it was too loud. i can't imagine what it was like right in front of the speakers.

ah, to be young and stupid again....

agree with a post above, better to have them and not need them than the opposite.

19. Well, back from the Slayer show.
By the way- they are still fucking awesome in concert.

Only a slight ring, since the show was at an outdoor ampitheater,
