listening to Patti Smith (HORSES), ask me anything when it's over

the recent threads on XTC and OMD, etc. had me flipping through my records... (yes, records, those big vinyl things your parents refuse to through away)

are you one of those people that has SO much music that you can never pick out something to play?

I have so many albums, and cassettes and CDs that I go into music shock and end up turning on the radio!

anyway, saw Patti and realized it had been years since I listened to it. this was one of those BIG records for me back when it came out. I was reading these japanese plays while listening to Patti and that's how my rock opera was born...

so many musical memories from those days...

Pretenders
B-52s
Robin Lane & the Chartbusters
Talking Heads
Television
Elvis Costello
XTC
OMD
David Johannson
Iggy Pop
Eno

turning off the TV is a good thing. if i saw the SH oral exam one more time....

3. i got to see her live once
during the EASTER tour.

i worked ticketron in Hartford and saw a LOT of amazing people in a very intimate venue, before they became HUGE

best were the B-52s, Iggy Pop, Pretenders....

ah, rock n roll! about the greatest high in my life was singing with the band that played/wrote the music for my show. we promoted it in a couple of the local rock clubs. there's just nothing like standing a mike with a hot band kicking ass behind you... wouldn't trade that experience for anything!

7. If this was the late 1970s, you may have handled my tickets a few times.
The shows I remember most from then, outside of a few at school, were Tom Waits and Blondie (different shows). I can't remember the name of the club, but it was the same place in Hartford.

I've seen Patti here in NY. She played for free at Lincoln Center a couple of summers ago. She also goes to a lot of demonstrations and sings The People Have the Power. J'adore Patti. She's the only Nader voter I never got angry with.

8. that would be the right time frame
i was definitely there in 1979-81. maybe a bit earlier.

worked the ticketron in G.Fox. my rock opera (JOHNNY KOMACHI) was performed in Hartford in 1980 at the Protean Theatre (with the local band The Sterics providing the music. that was the band that I got to sing with that summer...

can't think of the name of the venue anymore either. but I did see Blondie and Waits there too...

5. worst concert memory
I was at her Tampa show when she fell off the stage and broke her neck. I recall she was literally screaming/begging God to talk to her or send her a message.

A few assholes around me started laughing but it was a truly horrific sight.

6. OMG
that would be frightening.

my PS concert memory is her singing "You Light Up My Life" as her encore. Debbie Boone's version was a BIG hit at the time. it started off kinda :wtf: but, ultimately, she nailed it.

10. Ain't It Strange was the song
you got me thinking about that concert again, lol, so I looked up the lyrics.......

-----------
I spin, I spiral, and I splatter
Hand of God, I feel the finger,
Hand of God, and I start to whirl
And I whirl, and I whirl,
Don't get dizzy, do not fall now,
Turn, God, God (strange)
Go, go on, go like a dervish,
Turn, God, (strange) make a move
Turn, Lord, (strange)
I don't get nervous
Oh I just move in another dimension
Come move in another dimension
Come move in another dimension
Come move in another dimension oh oh oh
Strange strange
--------------

very strange indeed.

Too bad my rat bastard brother SOLD all my vinyl when I moved to Texas, didn't ask me, just assumed it was okay since I had "left" the albums behind. Lots of stuff you mentioned in the original post were in my collection.

12. what a great album ! the mapplethorpe pic of her is awesome
that they used for the album cover.

Two of my most favorite songs by her (Dancing Barefoot and Pissin In a River) are on other albums/cd's/whatever.
