My step-father (74yo) and my Grandfather (85yo)
refuse to use their canes. My stepfather fell in the walmart parking lot this week-end, yet he refuses to use his cane.

They both also refuse to get hearing aids.

It boggles my mind sometimes. It's not all that terrible to be old.

1. my father in law won't wear a hearing aid...so everyone shouts
it pisses his wife off.

I told her to stop shouting and when he hates being left out maybe he will get a hearing aid.

2. I have worn hearing aids since I was five
It's kind of insulting to me. Does wearing hearing aids really make you look so bad? I have gone without them and it really sucks.

5. the guy is a big fan of classical music...
he can't hear anything well anymore and yet he refuses...in his case I think it is vanity...

Personally I don't see any problem with them, it is wonderful technology.

For some it is. My mom is the same way - she wouldn't use her cane. It's like every time they submit to a cane, hearing aid etc.. they're losing more of their independence. It's frustrating as hell for the rest of us, but it's psychological for them.

Keep on them about them getting hurt for their own good, but don't expect a quick turnaround.

Good luck

8. Yes, I can't figure it out
Half the people who fall and break their hip, die. I wish they would get a clue.

Thanks for the advice.

6. I've been using a cane since I was 24 years old.
Yes, it sucks, but you suck up and deal with it. Refusing to use it is mostly just Vanity.
