Has anyone tried Sedation Dentistry?
Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 02:36 PM by Divameow77
Mods this is not asking for medical advice :-)

I am getting a root canal and a crown on Wednesday and I'm going with sedation dentistry, I'm freaking out, scared that is. :scared:
I have always been afraid of the dentist and have had some bad experiences so I decided to try it when I was told I need a root canal (just shoot me now please).

Anyone care to share their experience?

1. It got me back to the dentist
Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 02:41 PM by Oeditpus Rex
after not going for... an embarrassing amount of time.

If you've got a dental phobia, it's a godsend. You're not "out" — just gently, pleasantly sedated to the point that you don't care, and you might not even remember much of it.

You need to take the whole day off, though, and have someone drive you, because the sedation can last awhile.

Good luck! :hi:

Edit: Typo. :banghead:

2. I took the day off
my boyfriend is taking me.

It sucks that I have to pay almost $1600 bucks for this though, and that's WITH insurance.

3. Presuming you mean nitreous oxide aka "laughing gas"...

O.M.G.

I used to cry and not sleep for three days before I had a dental appointment. No joke. Now I LOOK FORWARD to them because of the nitreous. I am NOT kidding. I have never done street drugs so I don't know what might compare, but... holy geez... being on nitreous makes me all happy and spacey and off thinking Very Deep And Important Thoughts which would probably be idiotic as all hell if I had my wits about me.

When the nitreous kicks in everything around me just drifts away and I'm happily lost in my own little world. And time is just so wierd, because on one hand it's like my brain is on a five second delay, like if the dentist is drilling then I'm observing the drilling which happened five seconds ago, which is not scary because it's in the past, instead of observing the drilling which is happening at the moment (which I will start to observe five seconds into the future). But then again time speeds up because before I know it the appointment is over and I'm actually bummed because that means the nitreous has to go away. :(

My dentist is SO cool, he is aware of my extreme fear of dentistry and he will give me nitreous even for cleanings! - If I want to pay for it, since insurance doesn't cover it. Sometimes I do, sometimes not.

So I say go for it. And then let us know how it went.

Good luck.

4. I had sedation when I had my dental work, sit back and enjoy the trip.
I to had major fear of going to a dentist but not now.

A root canal and crown is not bad, don't let all the scary stories you hear get to you.

I had the root canal and crowns with no sedation, no big deal. You just need a good expience with a Dentist, I have a great Dentist.

You will fall asleep very fast, and it will all be over.

May I ask how bad your tooth is, my was really bad didn't think the Dentist could save the tooth.

Just relax.

5. I had a filling in the bottom tooth farthest back
and a different dentist didn't get all the cavity out so it was decaying underneath the filling. Plus I have another small surface filling near the gum line, so I'm sure they want to make sure it doesn't fall apart in the future from so many fillings in one tooth.

I have to take a pill an hour before my appointment, forgot to even ask what it is...

7. It might be Valium
Mine gave me something else — I've forgotten what now — but Valium is in wide use by sedation dentists.

10. It doesn't do much
Just relaxes you. Puts some people to sleep, but not like a sleeping pill. Unless you take like 50 milligrams or so.

If your dentist indeed gives you Valium, it'll probably be 10 or 20 milligrams.

6. Nothin to it

I was petrified of dentists for many years and sedation was the only way I could deal with any work on my teeth. I was apprehensive to the first time but it was a fine. (Okay, I clicked back in to edit the previous sentence which is supposed to read, "the first time too but it was fine" - but I'm finding it pretty funny - it's like a bad Italian accent or something). I just drifted off and had no idea what was going on and I had a nice little buzz for much of the day. :)

After a few years of dealing that way, I took the plunge and started going without. And now, I fall asleep in the chair, no matter what they're doing. Sometimes you just need that crutch for a bit to get over your phobias.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine. :hi:
