2. My favorite happy memory.
December 2000. It was the weekend before my sister was killed in a car accident. We were Christmas shopping. It was a windy day, it was a blustery cold Oklahoma Winter day. The sun was shining, even though it was a little hazy. We had just pulled into a parking spot in the Service Merchandise parking lot. We were gathering ourselves to get back out in the cold wind. My nephew, who is still resting comfortably in her huge belly, is kicking her like nothing else. He stops, and I put my hand on her stomach. I started talking to him and he jumped. He recognized my voice. I giggled. He jumped again. I said, "TJ, do you love your auntie?" And he kicked my hand so hard it hurt my sister. We laughed for so long. Oh I was so in love with that baby. I remember that day so vividly.
And that is my last memory of my sister. She was 8 months pregnant when she was in the accident. Neither of them survived. I miss her laugh.

7. It was a long time ago...
but I appreciate your kind comment. I've gotten through it. I wasn't looking for sympathy or attention. I just think it's a great memory.

8. It is a great memory. I do know how you feel.
My sister was killed in a car accident, too, in January of 1991. One of my happest memories was when I was 15 and she was 9, and she and my parents came to see me play baseball one day. To the best of my knowledge and that of my parents, she had never used a profane word in her life up to that point.

Well, I was bigger than your average 15 year-old, and she hadn't seen me play that year at all, but it was the playoff semifinal and a boy she had a crush on played for the other team. I got a pitch just where I liked it and managed to pound it, hitting it about 360-370 feet (I was roughly six feet tall back then and weighed over 180) and easily putting it over the same right field fence that nobody had reached all year. As I hit the ball and she watched it go skyward, you could hear her squeaky little voice yell "holy fucking SHIT!"

I was cracking up as I rounded the bases, she was jumping up and down and clapping for me, and everyone else in the bleachers was laughing (including my father) - except for my utterly mortified mother, who had her head buried in her hands.

We lost the game, but my team gathered together afterwards so that our manager could tell us that he was proud of us, and then he did something totally unexpected - he called my little sister over, went into his gym bag and pulled out a little trophy (he used to give a small trophy, at his expense, to the MVP of each of our games), handed it to her, looked at the rest of us and said "Let's hear it for our MVP for today!" Everyone laughed and cheered, and even my mother failed in her attempt to suppress laughter. My sister was smiling and laughing as my teammates put her up on their shoulders and took her on a tour around the bases, while I just stood near home plate and watched with an ear-to-ear smile on my face. My little sister - the MVP. :)

As sad as it is to recall memories of my sister and wonder what she'd be doing now, I'm actually laughing my ass off as I type this. This is definitely the happiest and funniest moment of my life.

I really appreciated reading yours, too. :)

It's really sad to see how many of us here have similar histories with this sort of tragedy. When my sister died, I responded by doing what anyone in my place should do anything but - I rifled a 12-pack of Beck's down my throat every night for about a year and a half.

My deepest condolences regarding your brother, Ariana. And you you as well for your sister, Duckie.

15. driving with my dad in my pick up truck listening to Lyle Lovett
and Counting Crows (he would always say, 'that's our boy' when Adam Duritz would sing).

Fire burning in the fireplace on Christmas Eve, Dad in a chair by the fire with his head back smiling to himself, listening to Bessie Smith singing about Christmas.
