I am offended, when artists try to copy the Beatles.
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 10:17 PM by LoZoccolo
Someone with a mullet is going around trying to sound like John Lennon, and is writing songs that are similar in style to John Lennon's:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL6Uo8DAZKg

On the one hand, altough Oasis was more popular than the Beatles in the 90s, I still respect the fact that the Beatles are the band whom Oasis is often cited as being more popular than, and occupy some of the slots below Oasis' Definately Maybe in the hundred best rock albums.

On the other hand, the Oasis sound is so unique that no one has attempted to imitate them. You see no guy playing guitar and trying to write songs like Noel Gallagher except with a unibrow.

Score one for Oasis.

1. OTOH, if imitation is the sincereist form of flattery
maybe the fact that nobody is trying to copy Oasis is a sign that the Beatles are far more popular and influential. Maybe nobody cares enough about Oasis to bother copying them, or maybe they just don't have enough fans.

12. These polls are meaningless
It could be argued that the biggest Beatles fans, the generation who grew up on their music, isn't the "internet generation" and thus that the Beatles were at a significant disadvantage. Furthermore, the fact that Sgt. Pepper's is supposedly the best Beatles album completely invalidates that poll, because anybody with half a brain knows that the best Beatles' album was Rubber Soul. Accept no substitutes.

There are scads of these lists, and every one of them is different. I can't believe there aren't more than 3 Bruce Springsteen songs in the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest rock songs. Everyone is going to agree or disagree. I don't even know why people argue about this. I was just being contrary :)

14. But sales records are not.
Oasis: five platinum albums.
The Beatles: none.

Even Milli Vanilli (with the strength of two Terence Trent D'Arbys and returned grammys) had a platinum album.

18. Ok, so lead with your best piece of evidence
Don't keep it in reserve for after someone shoots down your weak poll. That's hard to refute. But then, Mariah Carrey is supposedly the most successful recording artist of all time, so, I'm not sure how much it means to be popular these days. Anyway, I'm grooving to the Killers right now, so I'm not concerned with her, or Oasis.

The only music anyone truly needs is whatever they want. These petty contests are meaningless.

24. Well, all he can do is prove Oasis has 5 platinum albums
which they do.

Its impossible for him to prove that the Beatles didn't have any platinum albums, simply because it is impossible to prove a negative.

But the part of the claim that is provable checks out.

23. That's just a lie
Beatles: John, Paul, George and Ringo are the only act in history with five Diamond® albums, signifying U.S. sales of 10 million copies or more. These include the three best-selling albums of the 1960s, “The Beatles (White Album),” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “Abbey Road,” as well as a pair of 1973 hit compilations. The Beatles received their first gold album, “Meet The Beatles!,” and their first gold single, “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” on the same day - February 3, 1964. Music hasn’t been the same since.

7. Oasis DID try to copy the Beatles, and failed
They were more popular than the Beatles in the 90s because the Beatles weren't recording albums in the 90s.

But we've been down this road before, you and I.

Oasis is not, despite Noel's claims, the best rock band. They aren't even the best band of the 90s. They aren't even the best British band. They aren't even the best british band of the 90s.

They were big for two or three years.

I don't understand the fascination.

. . . it's ELO, Jeff Lynne's band. Noel Gallagher is very Beatles-influenced and even cops a few riffs from them, but Lynne is doing a John Lennon impression and a Paul McCartney impression on the vocals. It's beautiful but you do feel a little embarrassed for the guy.
