I just sent this e-mail to the Los Angeles Dodgers
Once again, I find myself in the unenviable position of being forced to listen to ESPN Radio or, worse, turn up the audio on Fox Sports broadcasts of Dodgers games in the NLDS.

Why? Because I live in Hollister and I don't have cable or satellite TV. I subscribe to Gameday Audio on mlb.com solely to listen to Dodgers games, but the internet stream has a delay of 30 seconds to one minute or so, which makes simulcasting Vinny, Charlie and Rick with the Fox broadcast out of the question.

I've been a Dodgers fan since 1965. In the old days, I could pick up KFI after sundown. Later, I could hear the games on KDWN, also after sundown. Between the time the contract with KDWN lapsed and Gameday Audio came on the scene, I could not hear the games at all — and it damned near killed me. Gameday Audio was a godsend, but I still can't hear the games in my car or anywhere else away from my computer.

So I'm imploring you to try to contract with a radio station in the Monterey Bay Area to broadcast Dodgers games for the 2007 season and beyond. I'll even volunteer to help in this effort. I'll circulate petitions to show station managers there's a market here or do whatever else I can.

I know I'm not the only Dodgers fan north of Santa Maria. Please don't leave us like this.

Thank you.

This is the act of a desperate fan.

3. Can you get 'em on one of those sattelite radio deals?
They're not free, but they're definitely cheaper than cable.

11. I suppose I could
But the point is, why should I have to shell out $XXX for a satellite receiver and a subscription when all I wanna do is hear my ball club like I used to?

Baseball and radio have been a perfect match since the '20s. Technology should not negate that.

4. Forgive my California geography ignorance...,
but how far away from LA are you? I'm 50 miles away from NYC and get WFAN clear as a bell in my car, I've actually been able to pick it up as far north as New Hampshire, west to Illinois and south to North Carolina...I would think LA would have a pretty strong signal broadcasting their games

8. Mountains. Mountains all around.
He's about 3-4 hours north of LA, with a few mountain ranges in between. Oedipus Rex, I feel your pain. I'm an A's fan in Los Angeles.

10. More like five
That's driving time. On a straight line, a la radio waves, it's about 250 miles from here to the KFWB transmitter in LA, and it's only a 5,000-watt station. The one I referred to in Santa Maria is about half that distance, but that's a 1,000-watt FM station. It's the closest one, but there's no way I can pick it up.

I can, however, pick up the Padres, because they're on a 50,000-watt boomer. :eyes:

The Dodgers have a station in Florida, where they have spring training, and one in the Virgin Islands, fer cryin' out loud.

Shakespeare, I was reading earlier about how the A's screwed so many of their fans with their radio contracts this year. People in Sacramento can't even get 'em, and that's where their Triple-A club is.

BTW — congrats.

So how do you cope with it? Got satellite radio or somethin'?

21. I just moved back down to LA a couple of months ago...
...so I did get to watch them most of the season (and go to a few games). I'm pretty sure I'll go with that cable thingie next year where I can buy a season's worth of their games (yay for DVRs). Besides just loving the A's as a team, they also have the best broadcast team I've ever seen (Kuyper, usually, but always Ray Fosse, who is a gentleman and a baseball god).

26. Yup. But Kuiper's position rotates.
Sometimes it's somebody else (depending on radio v. TV, and whether he's on for the Giants), but Fosse is always the main man on.

27. I wasn't aware of that
Seems like rather an odd deal.

But it does explain why the Giants have, all told, five announcers and no discernible pattern as to who's on when — apart from Jon Miller never doing a Sunday game because he does the ESPN game then.

It also explains why Kuiper and Mike Krukow rarely call a Giants game together anymore. I miss that, too. Those guys have great camaraderie.

15. WFAN's a boomer
50,000 watts.

Check out their coverage area: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WFAN&service=AM&status=L&hours=U

By contrast, I'm about an inch to the left of the Google Ads ad above the map: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KFWB&service=AM&status=L&hours=U

19. Rev, the Fan has 50,000 watts. It's one of the nation's SUPER stations.
You can pick it up in some 40 states when the "skiff" is right at night.

17. I can't stand 'em
And it apparently doesn't matter which "team" it is. Last night I was watching the Dodgers and Mets, and it was... Brenneman, I think, and Steve Stone — not the much-hated Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

They still drove me nuts. :grr:

6. Good letter...
I hope they respond to it...I wonder if I wrote a letter to Espn, they will show some Mariner games on their channels...

What gets me, is the double showing of games...about three years back, there was an interleauge game on, between Braves vs giants..it was on espn, the tbs channel, and the local sports net channel...when I was living in Sac...i was like, overkill much?

Sheesh...what took you so long?

And it's not desperation, it's...being a fan. It'll be okay. You'll see. They won't bite and you never know...you might start something.
