Going to need a bigger apartment

Step 1) We admitted we were powerless over books--that our lives had become unmanageable.

Can you say Intervention?

24. the books are for sale BECAUSE NO ONE IS BUYING THEM. That MEANS
YOU will not be able to sell them either.

No offense... it's just a very, very poor business decision to take on so much inventory when the others haven't been sold.

Just a word of caution!

28. Thanks for the advice.
but the books are for sale because after 30 YEARS in business, he's retiring. I think in 30 years, he might have sold a few books.

250,000 books, and not a good one in the bunch? Ok... That's a LOT of Barbara Cartland...

Funny, I heard the same thing before I bought the last batch of 30,000, and they seem to be selling ok.

But I guess poor business decisions are my forte...

Thanks for the caution...

RL

p.s. I did NOT bid on them or buy them... Buying 250,000 books and then having to pay to pack and ship them across the country, that is a poor business decision.

45. well.. I love ya and I love your enthusiasm and passion, but as a
business person as well.. my concern is that he has an inventory of a quarter million unsold books. And no one there is buying them or the store.

I make it a habit to pay close attention to trends and sadly, book worm girl that I used to be, we don't read like we used to... Humans are changing. The internet has changed the entire face of print media. We're watching newspapers -- NEWPAPERS -- die quite rapidly.

I understand the passion for books and reading, I truly, truly do, but... as a business, it's the last one I'd consider investing in. I've known people all my life who's dream it's been to open a book store, and not one of them ever, ever... ever made a real living at it. I'll bet you a million DU bucks that he got those quarter million books buying up the inventories of other booksellers going out of business.

I'm just saying, be careful, sell what you have now, or else your pile will also end up on ebay for someone to get cautionary about.

I love books. Books were my hiding place, my salvation and my solace growing up. I'd read 2 books a day from the local library... I'm not bookist, I promise! I just don't want you to get in trouble and lose your shirt!!!!

I have NO INTENTION of buying 250,000 books.

And with the ones I have, worst case, I have a great personal Library...

You are bidding on an unbelievable collection of approximately 250,000 used books. The seller has operated this bookstore in downtown Greensboro Greensboro, NC for more than thirty years.

And there's just something about books that's so...

HOT!

37. So your advice is not to buy book that are for sale, but only books ..
.. that have already been sold? But these are USED books, which they've already been BOUGHT once. So they've been around the block: somebody did want to possess them before, but then rejected them, and perhaps that has happened multiple times.

Damn. Now I've confused myself ...

38. And it's not necessarily 'rejection'...
As hard as it is for me to imagine, personally, there are people -- lots of them -- who will read a book, enjoy it, hold it close for a little while and then let it go for one reason or another.

I prefer to think of used books as pre-loved.

5. There's a bookstore two miles from here selling everything for a dollar
I got a hardback first edition Edna Buchanan from 2005 from them yesterday. For a dollar. I don't know if they don't know what they're doing or if they know exactly what they're doing and levels of literacy and interest in books has just declined that far. They also have bag sales every few weeks where you can get all you can fit in a sack for some nominal figure. I'm guessing $5 but it may still be just a dollar. The bookstore is between two large flea markets and clearly spun off from a stall at one of them. I'm guessing they're a large family with many members available to go cruise estate sales; otherwise, I don't know where they'd get their inventory since they don't show any evidence of buying or trading. Weird stuff; I keep having to restrain myself from going all RetroLounge and just saying, "How much for everything?"
