Poll question: Most improbable singing voice?
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 08:41 PM by undisclosedlocation
Mostly this is going to start out as white people, especially really really really white people, who "sound black." However, I'm open to suggestions and will take off any non-vote-getters for any plausible suggestions from the floor. Regardless, you know Rick Astley's going to win...:)

Edit: Now that I've filled the damn thing and editing time is ebbing away nominations start rolling in. So I have to take off Bill Medley for Tom Jones.

Editedit: Took off my own addition of David Byrne in favor of nominee from the floor Annie Lennox

1. Joey Ramone....
Not that he sounded black or white, for that matter....he sounded as improbable as for lead singer as he looked like one.

2. I guess I can go with that. I think I'll put on David Byrne with him,
though. Class of '77 CBGB's and all that.

3. Michael McDonald
Even if you don't know who he, you've heard his songs...and you probably assumed by his voice he was a large black man in the Issac Hayes, Luther Vandross, Barry White mold. He's not, he looks like Kenny Rogers.

20. From "40-Year-Old Virgin":
In reference to the Michael McDonald video

"If I have to hear "Yamo Be There" one more time, I'm going to "Yamo" burn this place to the ground. "

He's a fine musician. There's only so much I can take, though.

7. I dunno if falsetto really counts, but I'll put him on. The way votes
are(n't) rolling in, I don't think I really need an Other slot.

If you've ever seen the Time-Life History of Rock series, Neil Sedaka is under the illusion that he had a pivotal role in rock history.

Worse yet, they gave him a frickin' GRAMMY for "Best Vocals".

39. Thought about him, but since I sound just like him at the moment
(slight laryngitis added to an already very low voice) it was hard for me to think of him as having an improbable voice.:)

25. What was his name?
The lead singer for the band (memory loss there, too) who did "Time, Why you Punish Me?" and a lot of other hits I should remember?

I voted for Joe Cocker. Teena Marie was another one. I thought Madonna was black when I first heard "Borderline".

42. I'm sure there's a torrent floating around out there.
If you do decide to download it, you should also download the previous episode, as it was the second part of a two-parter. Or I suppose you could just keep an eye on the TV listings, as Adult Swim repeats things ad nauseum.

Come on. The guy had a 45-year-old baritone coming out of a face and body that looked like they were 12. It was freakish.

43. Thomas Quasthoff
Absolutely gorgeous operatic baritone voice coming out of a man who was born affected by thalidomide and who therefore has stunted arms and legs.

I saw him perform live as a soloist in Haydn's The Creation with the Oregon Symphony, before he was well known among the classical music public, and there was a gasp from the audience when he came on stage.

Not only is he white, he's a Brit--or at least he started life out that way, IIRC.
