If a tree falls in the forest and there are no live beings around within 100 miles
does it make a noise?

1. The simple answer:
Yes. Sound is there whether ears are there listening or not. If you need proof just think about our current political system. We try to get those in charge to listen to us, but they won't. But, if we try to hide anything from them, then they hear everything.

2. No, actually the word "noise" is something that is created by our
brain when soundwaves enter our ears.

Had this discussion with my son last night and I had to admit that he was right.

Noise only becomes noise when our brains interpret the sound waves as noise.

3. Actually, I should paid more attention to the question.
You are right. Sound is there, but noise is something we perceive. Of course, noise can also be generated electronically and have a definite shape to it. It's an interesting topic.

4. I thought so to. That question has been around for ages....seemingly
gone unanswered. Its kind of cool to sit with your kid in conversation and to discover the answer to something like this.

6. It creates a series of compressions in the air. These will likely be
too small for anyone to detect, so there will be no cognition of those compressions.

That's the truth.
