Rewriting history? - the invention of the wave

Where is Dave anyway?

So I read this article about the invention of the wave.

They say it is 25 years old, which would make it invented in 1981. However I remember doing it at Gopher football games, and not because we invented it, but because we had seen it done elsewhere. I was in the Gopher marching band and I can remember fellow band members horsing around and doing a two person wave and so on. I am pretty sure of this.
Since I graduated in 1980 and was only in the marching band in my first year of college, that would be October of 1980 - supposedly before the wave was invented.

So I say the wave is older than 25 years. Or did it get invented in the midwest and only get noticed by the coasts 25 years ago. :P
