What is an "Industrial Psychologist"...

and why is one of the companies I'm interviewing with making me see one? For six (6) hours???

I know someone with a Master's in that field, and that is what they do for a living.

He will be assessing if I will be a "good fit" for the company. Does that mean try not to act like Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer? Because I heard those guys acted "normal" anyway.

7. I had to see one before I got my last job.

It's a lot of personality testing, Meyers Briggs type stuff. True or false: I've never told a lie. I'd rather be a florist than a taxi driver. Sometimes the voices in my head tell me to kill someone.

I also had to take a writing and grammar test (OK, since my field was writing), a spatial reasoning test (OK, since I also had to do layout), and a math test (huh?). Then I interviewed with the industrial psychologist for an hour or so, more Meyers Briggs stuff (at one point, I just said: "I'm an ENTP," and he said "I'm not doing Meyers Briggs," and then he succeeded in asking more M-B stuff). It was, supposedly, to find out how I'd interact with others, how long I would last.

Complete BS, but on the upside -- if they send you to the psychologist, they want you for the job (since it's expensive, they won't just send everybody there).

They figure that the chance of that actually being true is small enough that it can be ignored.

I just have my own line in the sand; this is a hot-button issue for me. Also, I work in an industry (publishing) where things like drug tests and psych evaluations really have no bearing on how well one performs one's job.

Industrial Psychologists study and treat corporations. ;-)



Seriously though, IPs deal with the behavior and interactions of people in business/organizational settings. The company is probably making you see one to make sure their "investment" in you is worth their while. It is, no doubt, a more intensive variation on the personality tests that many companies have prospective employees take.
