Any California ppl remember Cal Worthington commercials??
Remember..."It's Cal Worthington and his dog Spot!"

Okay, I've done an informal poll amongst my friends over the years and about half of us (including me) thought he was saying, "Pussy cow, pussy cow, pussy cow" in the commercial instead of the real words "Go see Cal". Do I just attract freaky friends or is there anyone here who thought the same thing?

1. We lived right up the road from a Cal Worthington dealership
My mom went over there to get a car once. She was driving a hand-me-down beater (which was why she was at a car lot, go figure) and couldn't get any of the salespeople to give her the time of day.

I knew it was "go see Cal!" though, there were signs to that effect on the lot.

2. We had them here in Seattle too
He had a dealership on Pacific Highway South for a few years. The ads were totally goofy. I'd almost forgotten about the "Go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal" part - and I see how you could think it was "pussy cow."

8. I'm from WA too
And I remember him damn near being run out of town on a rail for "illegal busniess practices" - any idea what that was about?

6. OH YEAH! I remember Cal!
We moved to Washington when I was 10 and I was amazed to see commercials up here too (franchise I think - the commercials were the same as Cali). He was run out of Washington in the late 80s for "illegal business practices". They never said anything more.

I always heard "Go See Cal!" - I think its just you :)

"If you want a brand new truck, go see Cal."

7. There was a live interview with him this week on KUSI TV in San Diego, and
they showed a bunch of clips from his old commercials and then talked with him about them. He was in San Diego for the annual auto show, and he came to the KUSI studio for the interview. He looks pretty good for 86! He must keep himself in good health. They showed clips from his old commercials and he talked about them. They used many different animals for his "dog spot" but never an actual dog. I remember watching movies on LA stations in the 1970s, and he would buy up all the commercial time for hours on some of the smaller TV stations like KCOP (13), so every commercial during the movie was that same banjo music and "Now here's Cal Worthington and his dog spot!" - all evening and into the night, that was all you would see and hear at every commercial break. Cal's on the left in this recent photo:

11. Now let's see if you remember this...
Do you remember the guy who used to play the movies, I believe on Channel 5 (KTLA), on Sunday afternoons? He would be sitting there next to a film projector. I remember he used to play LOTS of Pippi Longstocking movies on Sunday afternoons.

17. Yeah, he used to interupt my beloved LA T-Birds roller derby and
professional wrestling.

I liked the commercials, though.
