How do I train my dog to poop in the same area in the yard?
I've had dogs who naturally decided to "choose a spot" in the yard to go boom-boom, but my current little heathen seems to prefer the chaos theory when doing her business. Does anyone have any training ideas so that I can get her to stop leaving her presents all over the place?

Note: This is not a "poop thread"; it's a dog-training thread.

1. you'll have to show him
poop there regularly for, say a couple of months.

3. How about this?
Should I move her poops to the designated area, and point it out to her? (ick) That technique worked when I trained a pet rat to use a litter box a few years ago.

5. ok, a real answer
just as you taught him not to go inside, you can teach him to go in one spot outside.

TAKE him out to do his business, and walk around the yard with him on leash. When you see him act like he's about to go, stop him and run him over to the right spot and let him go. Praise him profusely, maybe give him a little treat.

The trick is being with him every time he has to go.

7. Maybe I'll try that in the Spring.
Plus, she thinks that leash=go for a walk/ride in the car.

I dunno....Maybe I'll just start being better about about picking her gifts up. It's not like she's a big dog depositing "Jersey brownsnakes".

10. Oh, no, sir,
that would be a mistake. She can already tell where she goes without this kind of assistance, and she'd be more likely to avoid the areas that you 'decorated' for her!

18. oh, I know...
I gave him the same advice you did.

I just wanted to see if I could get somebody to shit in the yard.

Or maybe on the porch in the form of a flaming sack.

2. Put him in a real small pen and then he can't poop anywhere else!
I have no idea

I'm just glad when my dog poops outside

4. No pens. It would break her heart.
She only crapped inside once, and it was MY fault. I poured some bacon grease in her food. She enjoyed eating it, but the result was not good.

14. I'm Totally Kidding
I don't like pens either

I really have no idea, there is a pet forum that might have better answers, but maybe someone here will know.

6. shoot her in the butt with a BB gun every time she tries to poop
somewhere other than your designated spot?  Ok, I'm just kidding about that, and kids, don't try that at home!

If you're absolutely serious about this though, you may want to invest in one of those "shock collars" they use for training animals. Zap her every time she tries to go somewhere else.

Jeeze, looking at these ideas, nothing seems humane enough, unless you want to stand guard over her 24/7, then squirt her with the hose when she tries to go elsewhere. Or read a response above... and show her by example for a while.

:hi:

8. You'll probably have to leash her
for a while and take her to the same place over and over again. Pick times that are regular (like first thing in the morning and half-hour after a meal) and go directly to that spot without stopping and then just wait for it. She'll get trained to the location and the timing.

You will have to pick up the poop, because they don't tend to like to go into areas with landmines.

Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to play in the yard and use more of it than you normally would. Dogs usually prefer to go in places that aren't high-traffic areas or known to be reserved for other things.

Good luck!

11. That sounds about right.

I'm not crazy about frozen turdcicle season, but I'll give it a shot. She doesn't need a leash in the back yard, but she'll listen to me if I say "NO" when she's about to drop a deuce in the wrong spot. Up until now, I've been happy that she waits until I let her out.

13. I hired a service to clean up the backyard after the dogs.
Mainly because I couldn't get the kids to do it. Seriously, it is a legitimate business with disinfectant stuff and everything.

12. Put a treat in the 'special area'. Problem is,
it has to be close enough to reach at without being where he's poo'ed before. That's gross. Unless dogs like eating poo...

17. Positive reinforcement.
It'll take a little time, but go out with her. When she poops in "the spot" she gets a treat and a "good dog!!" and when she goes elsewhere she doesn't.

She's the sole dog here, yes?

19. She's the only dog in the house so far.
I'd like to rescue her a buddy one of these days, though.

22. Simple enough.
Plant a expensive and fragile plant in the desired spot. Works every time.
