Just when I thought I saw everything... my blanket was frozen to my window sill today

Yes people, my blanket was frozen solid to my window sill. Here's how *that* happened...

I live on the first floor of my dorm. There is a street light right outside my window. So, aside from my crappy curtains, I hang a fleece throw up in my window every night before I go to bed. this is easy to do, because I can stand on my bed to do it as I sleep right next to the window. Last night it was -5, and as I slept and breathed near the window, the water vapor from my breath condensed on the window and froze there. When I woke up this morning, the window pane was covered in a sheet of ice on the *inside* (like, you know, where I was sleeping). Anyhoo... I have to keep the window open during the day even though it's only 10 outside because otherwise my body and my computer heat up my little bedroom pretty fast. So, the ice started to melt during the day, but tonight when I wanted to close the window, I noticed that the ice had dripped onto my blanket which I keep on the window sill during the day and re-frozen... sticking the blanket solid right there on the window sill. Plus there were icicles in the window frame, so I had to slam it shut over a dozen times to break them all free and open the window. So, that's how my blanket was frozen to the window sill.

FYI, the widow is now open because it got hot in here again, and I'm even wearing a t-shirt. Outside temp in Toronto (with wind chill): 11F. Good times.

I guess I didn't figure it would be the same temp just inside the window as it was outside. However, we've seen -40 around here so it's really not *that* cold.

3. Don't open the window

Do you realize how bad that is for the environment? The heater will put out more heat to try to get the room up to temperature. When you close the window, it will get hot of course. Break the cycle by keeping the window close all the time. When possible, open the outside door towards the hallway. This air should be nearer to the temperature that you want in your room. When you insist on being alone in your room with the door closed, wear shorts and a tee shirt or nothing at all. This increases the chance that your room temperature will find a better balance. Even if it doesn't, you are saving a lot of energy. You might not pay for it, but it is increasing your room fees and impacting the environment.

4. The heater is always off.

I think it's been on twice the whole year, and that's when my roomie on the other side of the wall has turned it on for his bedroom. I don't like the heater and I've covered up the only vent with pictures from an old Colorado mountain photo calendar. My body heat and the computer being on heat it up just fine, to the point where I have to keep the window open even when it's freezing out, especially since there's no breeze and hardly any ventilation anyway, particularly early in the year when half the window was blocked up by ivy leaves.

You will have to put me in touch with the company that did insulation for that building.

It probably also has something to do with the fact that it is impossible to use a cell phone in this building unless you have your head sticking out the window.

6. I don't think there is a dorm anywhere that's not overheated

and over dry. (Except in the bathrooms - those are wet and moldy!)

7. The heater kicked on frequently in the winter in my dorm room

It was around 80 degrees most of the time, but the heater came on at least a few times a day and opening the window meant that it was running often.
In my junior and senior years, I had a room on an upper floor with an exterior wall. There were a few times when it was windy and cold out that I was cold in my dorm room.

I've got some good winter gear though. I bought a new pair of good boots this summer, I have a 3/4th length wool overcoat, a ski jacket that's like a portable sleeping bag (double-layered), flannel-lined jeans and a fur/leather Russian hat. I'm good to go.
