I just had to use the phrase "This is not a matter of belief, it is physics!" Guess who at?
Guess who I had to take down by pointing out that "You believe what you believe, I'll believe what I believe" is not valid in the discussion of whether the Giant Impact Theory of the Moon's formation is viable?

27. He was spinning a line of BS about how the Moon was formed
Trying to tell me that if a planetoid had crashed into Earth's ocean, it would have left a bare spot because the water would have gone into space, and since Pangaea was the only continent, the planetoid-impact theory can't be true.

31. Ah.
Perhaps he needs a review of basic properties of fluids? Besides ... I thought the theory held that the impact happened very early in the geological history of the earth, possibly before ocean formation. But I haven't kept up with the latest thinking on this subject.

32. So then after he said that BS...
I told him why it wouldn't work that way, and he disagreed, and then said in a really condescending way, "Well, you believe what you believe, and I'll believe what I believe."

37. Obviously
you are interested in matters astronomical. (That's sexy, BTW.) Do you "put your money" on the impact theory, or are you just unwilling to dismiss it without more compelling evidence?

50. Absolutely fascinating! My younger son (age 8) told me this today:
"In the future there were Nazis including Hitler coming out of their graves and dancing like 'Uh uh uh uh' and it was the Rebels vs the Empire, then they went back to 2001 and they made the cars run on sugar and oil for some reason. And then if anybody sniffed it two times, they'd do the cha-cha, but if they sniffed it five times they'd go ballistic."

It is the plot of a story he is wrtiting, which I guess is being influenced by a book he read about WWII.

54. Pangaea is only the most recent supercontinent
and existed about 250 MYA experts believe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercontinent#Incomplete_list_of_supercontinents

As far as the creation of the moon goes, the giant impact theory is pretty much universally accepted by the experts and that's good enough for me. If the theory has to change in light of new evidence, then I'm cool with that too.

The fundies just want to say g-d did it and then stop thinking.
