Repairman fantasy!
I just had a guy come out to give us an estimate for repairing our floors and he was truly the stuff of fantasy!

First of all, he responded quickly to my email request for an appointment. He emailed me yesterday just to confirm (!) when he would be here. Then today he actually showed up A MINUTE EARLY! He was friendly, polite, he knew what he was talking about, he didn't try to sell me stuff I don't need or want. He gave me an honest assessment of what was wrong and a list of options. His recommendation for our particular situation is actually the least expensive option!

He promised to email me later with an estimate and, you know, I believe he will.

I've never had this good of an experience before with a contractor or repairperson. It was amazing!

What? Were you thinking something dirty? Shame on you!

(Although I will admit he had the most beautiful blue eyes I've seen in a long time) ;)

1. Well, I've been reading about Ted Bundy
You just described him to a tee - except that part that you're alive!

3. LOL! Well, he didn't ask me to meet him out by his van or anything.
As I recall Ted was handsome and personable but would always end up asking the girls to do something weird, like help him lift something out by his car. I think nowdays girls would be a bit more wary of something like that, but I suppose you never know.

Luckily though, I found this guy through Angie's list and he was highly recommended, so I figured it was okay. :)

4. Well, it was the initial consultation so I didn't ask to see
any wood of any kind. But if I hire him I can let you know.

5. I was SO hoping
you were going to say you live in MI, but alas I checked your profile and you don't.

We have been working with contractors for the last year and it can be a nightmare.

you were lucky!

9. I checked her location too
We're getting this place ready to sell or rent, depending on the market, and looking for a new place that will probably need some work, and we're having a hell of a time hiring somebody who is professional in their reliability and workmanship, even though we're quite willing to pay what it costs.

11. It's horrible ..
we've had contractors disappear for days. NEVER show up on time, and always have emergencies in the family to explain why they didn't call to reschedule.
Our drywaller was the best. A guy with a crew of 4 who bid fairly on the job, showed up early every day, was polite and considerate and did excellent work. They did what they said he'd do, for the price he said he'd do it and had it finished a day sooner than scheduled. I wish I could clone him.

good luck with your project :)

13. auntAgonist and LeftyMom, I know your pain.
Do you have an Angie's List for your area? That has helped a lot for us and I think it's forcing service professionals to actually rethink the way they do business. Not everyone we've found through them has been perfect (oh, the headaches we've endured with our HVAC unit would curl your toes), but most of the businesses that get really stellar ratings on Angie's List turn out to be great. We found a great painting contractor that way. We ended up recommending them to our condo board when it was time to repaint all the common areas.

Anyway, thanks! I do realize how lucky I am to have found someone like my floor guy. It's sad that it's so rare.

:hi:

6. Did you pinch yourself to see if you were dreaming?
Stuff like this almost never happens in the real world where contractors don't return calls, put you off, miss appointments, and lie to your face.

Glad you found a good one!

I'm a 12 to 13 hour drive away (though I'll be out that way for IML over the Memorial Day weekend)

12. I almost asked him if he was a liberal but I don't know what I would've done
if he was. He would've been too perfect! LOL!

He is a foodie, though, which is a big plus with me. We talked at length about produce markets, new restaurants in Chicago, and the best pizza (*not* Chicago-style, but real Neopolitan-style).

14. Actually our auto mechanic is incredibly handsome. I had only spoken to him
on the phone for years because my husband would drop the car off and I would pick it up after they closed. But this last time we had to bring it in, we went together and I got to meet him in person. He was so handsome I actually almost lost my balance when I shook his hand. My husband never mentioned to me that several of the women in his office take their cars to this guy and think he's gorgeous too.

18. Was I thinking something dirty? No.
My first thought was - fantasy? Did he get there on time and do the job honestly? LOL!
