Man Asks Roman Catholic Church To Annul Marriage Because His Wife Smokes

<snip>

VATICAN CITY (Reuters Life!) - Smoke got in his eyes. Too much of it, so he asked the Roman Catholic Church to annul his marriage when his wife refused to kick the nicotine habit.

That is just one of the, well, hazy cases that wound up before the Vatican's Sacra Romana Rota, a top court which hears the most complicated of marriage annulment requests.

Others included women who wanted annulments because their husbands were "mammoni" (mamma's boys) who were not able to cut the psychological umbilical cord with their mothers even though they are in their 30s or 40s or beyond.

The cases have been reported in the Italian media since last Saturday, when Pope Benedict delivered an address to the court's judges asking them to be more careful in granting annulments.

An annulment in the Roman Catholic Church is an official ruling that a marriage was never valid, that it effectively never existed.

Among other reasons, annulments can be granted because of psychological immaturity of one or both partners at the time of the marriage, a hidden factor not known to one partner, problems of consent, lack of sexual consummation and forced marriages.

8. LOL.
no. She's like her mom. Deal breaker.

Although I wonder why she asked me to get her a carton of Kools for her confirmation retreat next week? I hadn't thought about that before.

23. OMG-- I had to chaperone several confirmation retreats
Those kids were evil -- drinking, smoking, trying to have sex. Plus, I couldn't smoke around them, so I had to go sneak into the woods to hoover down a cigarette.

This of course was in my previous life as a CCD teacher.

Of course, this will help you win points with my family.

I can even totally fake my way through Mass, if need be.

You're just with me because you wanted to boink a CCD teacher...

26. I KNOW! I'm not sure I should let her go with all those miscreants.
I mean, if it were a Baptist church, at least they wouldn't try all that crap.

29. Yeah, they'd just be having
Oral and anal sex instead.

At one point during one retreat. I Just flung open the door to a cabin and yelled, "STFU or I'm calling all your parents the SECOND we get back to Greensboro!" Jesus Christ.

The priests wanted me to go so they'd be someone under 50 there.

7. My wife's parents had their marriage annulled
after having 7 kids. The youngest was a senior in high school at the time. Tell me how that one works. So according to the church the marriage never happened which makes my wife and her 6 siblings illegitimate.

that can say after decades of marriage and multiple kids that the marriage never happened so that the couple can have other sacraments.

18. I don't understand the rationale behind it and I'm Catholic.
In fact, one of my family's dearest friends was the highest ranking American at the Vatican during the 70s and 80s. I remember conversations about annulment, but I don't ever recall getting an answer about it.

My cousin couldn't get an annulment when he and his wife split up, which was so weird, because if anyone deserved one, it was him. Wife was cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

20. Oh, she was a nutjob. I actually feel terribly sorry for her.
She desperately wanted to have children, not just be a mom, but to 'have them'. She couldn't. They went through all kinds of testing, treatments, etc., and it just wasn't to be.

She wouldn't even consider adoption. Never mind that her husband was so well connected with Catholic Charities through his business that he could have had a baby for her within a week, she wouldn't hear of it.

It got so bad when all the family was having their second, or their third, that she stopped talking to all of us and wouldn't come for holidays.

Finally, he moved out in an effort to give her some space before deciding what to do. So, according to the judge, he 'abandoned' her. (Note to anyone contemplating divorce, DON'T MOVE OUT)

He was giving her $2400 a month and paying the house note. She was working as a special education teacher, so it wasn't as though she was starving.

At the divorce hearing, she asked for $3800, so the judge split the difference and he is paying her $3100 a month and the house note for another three years, five years altogether.

Fucked up beyond belief.

16. My step-dad is trying to get his previous marriage annulled.
He has three kids. My mom wants to get married in the Church.

:eyes:

I asked if that meant we all got to go to Hawaii again (like we did after their mayor-officiated wedding, but they didn't answer me.

21. Yeah, don't change the crazy rules
about when you can and can't get married in the church, just had out crazy "this marriage never happened" rulings for stupid reasons. That is so much better.

17. He's got grounds:
"In the case of the non-smoking husband, the health and physical fitness enthusiast asked his girlfriend to marry him on condition she would eventually quit smoking."

Can. 1102 §1. A marriage subject to a condition about the future cannot be contracted validly.

If Matcom's willing to monitor this case, I'll take bets the husband wins.
