Poll question: How fast is your internet?
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 10:04 AM by HypnoToad
Tell us if you're using 56k, DSL, cable, satellite, or other?

(in the poll, vote for the number that matches the service you paid for if you haven't done any actual bandwidth tests.)

(I use DSL, the line is 8192k, but realtime testing hovers over the 4096k mark.)

1. 3 Mbps is not an option above.
That's my download speed, and testing confirms.

3. DSL.
A local provider offered standard T-1ish DSL, then later called to say that they would be upgrading us for free after the central office got new equipment. It's worked fine, and beaten the pants off what BellSouth and Earthlink did for/to us.

The difference between 1.5 and 3 mbps is insignificant, really, except for those times when my wife and I are doing big downloads at the same time. No server on the Internet is really going to let you connect at over 1.5 megs.

4. 10Mbit
Although I don't recall ever actually downloading anything at 10Mbit/sec. Something always bottlenecks it somewhere.

6. Comcast claims I should be getting 6000K
Right now it's at 2500. So does that mean I should only pay them 41.7% of my monthly bill?

18. I have Comcast too and I have no idea how fast it is...
faster than dial-up, a little faster than when we had DSL...

Sickeningly overpriced though. Damn you Verizon for not having service in my new area!

Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 11:14 AM by jasonc

Your poll does not give me an adequate option.

Comcast Cable.

edit: this was over a WiFi network too, if I plug into the router it will be faster, and even faster still if I plug directly into the modem.

LOL...you can get artificially high results by hitting the back button.

I actually have 3mbps Cable, but I often download at speeds up to 10mbps.

I'm out of range for DSl and just will not deal with the local cable company.
It makes for disciplined surfing and downloading.

29. Test you Down Load & Upload Speed @ Speakeasy...free
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 12:59 AM by 133724
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

on edit for comments:

Mine varies with the load on comcast. it can be anywhere from 1.5 to 10.6 MBPS.

Today it was 10.6 MBPS from Seattle to Seattle. But it is only 542 KBPS to Atlanta.., about 20 times slower when going cross country...

It will also very when it is tested against other cities.

e.g. I get poo results from the east coast but the left coast is mostly over 6 MBPS...

30. You forgot the "No Clue" catagory there HT
I could partake in your poll if that was one of the options...I gots me a cable...like the one which runs both of my tvs see... and I get a monthly bill, more than this gets a bit too technical for me. (I love livin' in the future...)
