Richard, July 20, 1994 - February 3, 2007

Richard died peacefully in my arms today, and I was in Kathy's.

Lymphoma is the most likely cause of his death. He'd been looking into Kathy's eyes for a week, telling her he was done.

Dr. Heinze gave him the drug through a catheter that was secured to his paw by a blue bandage onto which the staff had pasted a red heart. The vet's office sent us a bouquet of flowers.

Kathy and I have had enough of grief for a while. Her cousin Mayra last May, my Grandma in October, and now this wonderful creature who was so, so loving, funny, and sweet . . . . How is it that we're able to endure what is impossible to endure?

Richard was a chronic ignore-the-litter-box cat, and of course as he got sick we tried to be patient and just clean it up. Today when I realized I'd have no more clean up to do, I lost it again. Laughed and cried at the same time.
