1. Does the Six Million Dollar Man count?
I wanted to be just like him, when I was 6.

7. As a child, my hero was the kid in "My Side of the Mountain"
I must have read that book ten times by the time I was twelve.

"I am on my mountain in a tree home that people have passed without ever knowing I am here."

Now that I'm supposed to be an adult, I'd say this guy:

"Alone in the Wilderness" is the story of Dick Proenneke. To live in a pristine land unchanged by man... to roam a wilderness through which few other humans have passed... to choose an idyllic site, cut trees and build a log cabin... to be a self-sufficient craftsman, making what is needed from materials available... to be not at odds with the world, but content with one's own thoughts and company... Thousands have had such dreams, but Dick Proenneke lived them. He found a place, built a cabin, and stayed to become part of the country.

9. This is sooo cheesy, but I loved Ralph Machio as the Karate Kid.
Also a gymnast named Kim Zmeskal. She was supposed to win gold at the Olympics, but of course didn't.

10. Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan.
I loved that "Big Red Machine" Cincinatti Reds team and these two guys were my favorite players. They were leaders, played hard, and were nice guys. What else could a kid ask for?

14. I learned to love baseball by watching the Dodgers and Reds in the '70s.
I lived in California, so I saw much much more of Cey, Garvey, Lopes, John, etc. But the Reds of that era were as good a team as has ever been put together.

22. That was a great rivalry. I always liked that Dodgers team, also.
I used to love to watch Mike Marshall pitch and also liked Cey, Garvey and Lopes.

16. Dick Van Dyke
And then I saw him in a television movie where he played a raging alcoholic with the d.t.'s and that pretty much killed it for me. Rob Petrie is not supposed to be a sad drunk.

17. Neil Armstrong.
I was a huge space nut and idolized all the Apollo astronauts, but Neil took some beating. So laconic and steely-nerved. He landed the Lunar Module like he was parking a car, in spite of the fact he was doing it blind on uncharted territory and with 20 seconds of fuel left.
