Snicker's Commercial was the final straw!

I have a childhood friend I've known for over 40 years. Over the past decade he has become more and more right-wing and more and more Xtian-right-fundy. He voted for bush* and was pro-war, and for the most part, still is. We have argued and argued for years over email about politics, culture, gay marriage, abortion, immigration, the downfall of civilization, etc. His tortured republican logic and barely hidden bigotry against gays, immigrants, minorities and women were usually good for a laugh, if not an easy slap-down, but more and more his replies have been "because the bible says so" or "because liberals are sinners" etc.

Well, today, he sent me an email laughing at people who were offended by the snickers commercial, said they should just "get over it" and if they don't like the commercial, turn it off. I tried at first nicely, then in a more strident sense to explain why people were offended. Why I was offended. After a couple of hours of back and forth, he said that gays are a minority, and that we don't need to cater to them, and majority rules in this country, then he told me that me and my "HOMO gang of whinners" need to get over it.

Right before I put him on email block, I laid into him, very agrily, very nastily, and very much with finality, ending with "Fuck You!"

Oh well, one more friend gone... Who needs bigots as friends anyhow...

Has he ever heard of protecting the minority FROM the majority? What happens when he is the minority? Will he still say "majority rules"?

You are an AWESOME mom and your daughter is SO lucky to have you. I would have killed to have a mother like you during HS. I had a really rough time of stuff. It's better now, but I had no real family support when I got dragged out of the closet. Fortunately, I had good friends (with good parents) and a few really supportive HS teachers. I lucked out on going to a very liberal NJ public school.

My daughter actually asked me about that the other day and I'm ashamed to say that I've been so damn busy working and going to school that I haven't really had time to figure out EXACTLY how the law works and what it actually allows.

33. The law offers the rights of marriage, but it is called a "civil union."

Of course, it means absolutely NOTHING outside of NJ legally. Like I live in NJ and my GF (LostinVA) lives in VA for the time being, if we were to get a civil union in the future, it would mean absolutely nothing if anything happened to one of us outside NJ or if we didn't live in NJ. Out of state residents are allowed to get a civil union here, though. Other states just won't recognize it (MA, VT, CT might).

Oddly enough, it was the Republican judges that wanted to go all the way and call it marriage, while the Democrats wimped out and only called it "civil unions." Of course, NJ politics are weird. I like in "red" NJ and it's quite socially liberal. A good portion of the Republicans in NJ are socially liberal, but want lower property taxes.

The majority doesn't always rule. We actually live in a constitutional republic, not a democracy. Certain rights are spelled out that supersede any vote. Unfortunately, we lesbians and gays don't have any of these guaranteed rights yet. Hopefully soon.
