What's the correct response to the statement "I think you're smarter than me" ?

Especially if you think it's kind of true, but you don't want to be rude.

Someone said that to me and all I could come up with is "that's sweet of you to say"

21. Say something like:
"Impossible. You're smart enough to be my friend. That makes us even, at the very least."

Unless it's someone you don't like. Then, of course, it's always acceptable to respond, "I hear that from everyone. Join the crowd--the world needs small people, too."

Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 01:08 AM by MJDuncan1982
Oh, don't worry. No way in Hell I'd have caught that on my own.

Edit: But wait...perhaps it is you who is being more modest by not correcting the other person's grammar! So then you are not only more modest but you are also most definitely smarter!

Just kidding! I'm over-educated, so when someone brings up my er...educational bounties, compared to their, uh, lesser attributes, I get all flustered. Because I know the truth is that there are so many out there who are much wiser than I, and without an ounce of formal education.

55. "I doubt that, I just happen to know something about this subject."
Or something like that. First off, the moment you blush and say "Ah, gee, thanks!" you will then trip over your shoelace, try to catch yourself on an unstable chair, topple to the floor, and in a last ditch effort to save yourself pull their linen tablecloth and six place settings of fine china on top of you. Karma has a way of evening out such moments.

Second, it's probably true. No matter what you are smarter than them on, there's something they do better than you, and it is good for your soul to acknowledge that. :)
