Has anyone used tax software?
I am thinking about using Turbo Tax since it is relatively inexpensive and my taxes aren't terribly complicated. Has anyone had experience with this software or others?

9. Hear, hear!
It has helped me realize deductions my old accountant was too lackadaisical to bother with.

3. I've used Turbo Tax via internet in the past. H&R Block's web software
is quite easy to use as is Turbo Tax. I used H&R Block this year.

4. We used
Kiplinger's Tax Cut for years but now we make so little we use the EZ forms so don't need to anymore. I thought it worked fine. Some of the areas were a little complicated, but we had our own small business at the time so there were alot of things to account for.

5. Doing taxes used to be so simple
Now, you can't keep up with all the details, so you need software. I don't mind paying taxes, but it's come to the point I can't understand all the nuances. Now, if I was "rich" I could afford tax advice to reduce my taxes. Screwed again. What's going on? And I don't even want to talk about all the regressive taxes imposed and being proposed (i.e gas tax). Or cutting taxes that I never realize. I could go on, but all I'm doing is getting worked up over something that I literally have no control over.

7. Used to use TurboTax, switched to TaxCut, now do online
Many of the companies offer free tax program online, (accessed through IRS, links to direct websites) if your income stuff qualifies. I'm checking out a couple this yr.

8. Depending on your income, you could do them for free here
http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/

Oddly enough, when you do the free version of Turbo Tax, they allow the IRS to deposit your refund directly into your account, unlike when you pay for the service. When you pay, they shuffle your refund through a bank in San Diego (I think that is where they are located) and they charge you 30 bucks for the privilege of letting this bank "receive and forward" your refund to your account for you. If they can cut this step out in the free version, why is it necessary to agree to that detour of your money when you pay for it?

10. TurboTax is great. Don't do it with the on-line version, though.
The full-tax monty online will cost you north of $40. You can get the software at CostCo on a good day for about $25. One-use only, but worth it.

12. Turbo Tax here
The spousal unit does our taxes (a. she's a CPA, b. she's a financial analyst, c. she's much smarter than me) and has used Turbo Tax since 2000 (tax year 1999)

It's made the process MUCH easier. The check that goes in with the return isn't any less painful, though ;-)

19. OK, I'll be different. I like TaxAct.
It's all online and it's the cheapest I've found.
The federal return is FREE if you don't file online.
i.e. print out and mail in.
This is my 3rd or 4th year using it and it works great.
Even for complicated stuff like Miz t.'s (very small, family inheritance) oil royalties.

Your info is stored at their website and appears to be totally secure.
I always keep a hard copy, but you can also go to their website and look at previous returns.

BTW, I filed online (or thought I had) my last year with TurboTax and 5 months later got a letter from the IRS asking why I hadn't filed.
Now I ALWAYS mail in my hard copy.

20. Usually your state's Dept of Revenue will offer a free tax service, and any of them do your Federal
at the sametime. I have already got my state refund.
