Okay....
First I have a B.S. in Physics from the university in the state where I live. That's a Bachelor's of Science! I've been looking for work for almost a month and still I am getting nowhere. Not even the local Winco will employ me. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do, and am starting to become a little worried about paying my bills next month.

Second. I don't get the whole Snickers thing.

There are some of you on DU who are so gung ho about the whole "it didn't offend me so I don't see what the big deal is" mentality. I'm not black, Asian, or a woman. How can I know that calling someone a n****r, a c****k, or a walking pussy is a bad thing? Oh yeah...I took the time to see the negative power these words had when directed at the people they were meant to harm. If you don't want to see things from the perspective of those who are offended by the whole thing, then it doesn't really bother me. .

For the rest of you who are so offended that you have to constantly bring the whole thing up I have this to say You're offended. That's OK. The world in which we live is an amazingly racist, homophobic, and sexist place. The only thing we can do is band together to make sure that these racist, sexist, homophobic things don't happen again. One of the ways we can do this is to educate those who will listen. If the ones we are trying to educate refuse to hear our words then what will becoming angry and dismissive yield?

Does this mean I wasn't offended about the add? No. I find it to be a clear indication of where Snickers stands on the whole issue when two men can't use the "goodness" of the Snickers bar to overcome the "ickyness" of kissing--for a brief moment--another man. I don't ever intend to buy another Snickers bar (of course I don't eat them anyway so it's not that big of a deal to me).
Does all this mean I'm going to fight with anyone who doesn't agree with my point of view? No. In fact, I am vowing to everyone that I will not argue with anyone who just "doesn't get it." Furthermore, I pledge not to post thread after thread after thread after thread containing the same drawn out battles. If anyone out there is interested in picking a fight, please give me advance warning so I can stay away from your comments to each other.

I come here for the news, political commentary, and the small amount of idle banter offered by the lounge. I don't come for the drama. As an openly gay man who hangs out with other people (gay and straight), I get enough drama sitting at home listening to my friends talk to and about each other.

We aren't always going to be unified. I would like to see the Democratic Party take the lead on the gay marriage...or at least civil unions debate. That being said I'm not going to tell anyone who wants the party to focus on workers rights or health care instead of what I want to f*ck off. We aren't all going to agree on the same things. That's what happens when you live in a world that allows for such a spread of constantly changing points of view.

People think different things, people feel different ways about the same thing, people want different things for themselves and their children. All of the constant bickering I've seen in the last couple of days seems like it does nothing more than entrench the points of view in either party so that they will never be moved one way or the other. If we must talk about the add or the way we feel about it, I implore all of you to keep it in a respectful tone. The only way we learn about each other is by respecting each other. You may walk away from our conversation thinking what you thought before, but at least you'll know where I'm coming from.
