it's been 7+ years since i Last did my civic duty of juryism
and it seems to be a bit different than what i remember (i've served twice).

the Last two times i served, i showed up at the courthouse, received a number and was kept in a room with everyone eLse. periodicaLLy, a person wouLd enter the room and yeLL out a number, and everyone with that number wouLd Leave for the jury pooL. both times, my number was not caLLed and i was reLeased at about 11:00 a.m.
pretty good - i didn't have to serve on a jury, got paid a fuLL 8 hours for sitting in a room for 3 hours.

now, i'm supposed to caLL a number the day before which wiLL teLL me whether or not to show up.

so, my questions are..

if i caLL and am informed that i am not needed the next day, does that stiLL count as fuLfiLLing my civic duty (the Last 2 times, just showing up and not being caLLed counted)....
and if so, do i stiLL take the day off anyhow? (it is vaLentines day.. whatever that means)

1. I had that happen to me
and it counted toward my civic duty. I also took the day off from work (I figured what the heck, they planned on me being out anyways).

5. my employer at the time
was not the wiser. they were pretty lax about asking for any documentation that i was actually at jury duty.

2. Yes, that counts as civic duty
and no it's not covered under the day off thing. If you can get away with it, I would; but if your boss finds out they can dock you sick or vacation time...or fire you.

They do that call-in thing here in CT...they just tell everybody to show up though.

6. I've only been called for jury duty once in my life, and it was in 1994.
I registered to vote in 1981 when I turned 18, and I'm 43 now. Don't ask me why it's only been once---'cause I don't know! :P I was not actually required to serve on a jury because they kept us hanging around the jury room until lunchtime, then sent us on a two-hour lunch. When we got back, they sent us home. The only thing I accomplished that day was to get my absolute fill of Jerry Springer and Montel Williams and to plan my sister's bridal shower.

Good luck with your jury stint!
